The following contains spoilers for Episode 1 of Spy x Family Season 2, "Follow Papa and Mama," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

It's the Fall 2023 anime season, and the hilarious fake-family comedy from last year has finally returned, featuring more wild misadventures from the Forger family. With each member desperate to keep their family together while hiding heavy secrets from one another, this second season is sure to bring as many laughs as the last.

The second season starts with a bonus chapter of the manga not covered in the first season. It handily proves that the anime has yet to lose its touch, and is just as hilarious as it has always been. Wit Studio and CloverWorks' animation work is firing on all cylinders, and while this week's episode is a little subdued, that doesn't stop it from being a great opener for the season.

A Disastrous Date

Spy x Family S2 E1 Anya and Franky's Disguises

Though she was told to stay home with Franky, Anya manages to convince him to go tail Loid and Yor's date instead. Despite wearing disguises, they are immediately discovered by Loid, but he decides to ignore them so that he can focus his attention on Yor's mood. Unfortunately for him, most of his choices end up being bad for Yor; her wound keeps her from fully engaging in many of the activities Loid has planned out for them, including watching a movie at the theater and going for a boat ride.

Feeling utterly defeated, Loid takes Yor to a ritzy restaurant to have dinner. Anya and Franky aren't able to enter, so the two decide to go home for the day. However, Anya manages to overhear a waiter recognizing Yor as the Thorn Princess, her assassin alias. The waiter turns out to be a former Red Circus member, and though he planned to go clean after surviving Yor's attack, encountering her inspires him to take revenge for his fallen allies. Realizing that Yor's identity could get revealed to Loid, Anya decides to take matters into her own hands and convinces Franky to help her sneak into the restaurant.

Anya's Rescue Mission

Spy x Family S2 E1 Secret Agent Anya

As Anya and Franky sneak into the restaurant using the vents, the waiter makes his first assassination attempt by squeezing out blowfish toxin and passing it off as wine. Anya is unable to stop Yor from drinking the poison, but to her surprise, the poison has little effect on Yor. In fact, it actually numbs her to the pain from her wound, allowing her to focus more on her date with Loid. Stunned, the waiter decides to put together a makeshift bomb using materials from the storage room. However, Anya gets there first, and sets traps to keep him from getting to the storage room, ultimately blowing him up with a non-lethal version of the bomb he planned to make himself. Anya appears and intimidates him into giving up his revenge, and she leaves as he passes out.

Meanwhile, Loid and Yor's dinner ends well, and the two enjoy a walk out in the night. As they look out onto the city below, Yor thanks Loid for taking her out and asks him to take her out again sometime. Loid is happy that the date went well, but unfortunately, Yor is once again in pain the next morning due to the poison wearing off. Unable to understand what went wrong, Loid admits defeat.
