Season 2 of Spy x Family started off with a bang and a bark - the latter coming from the latest addition to the Forger family, a dog named Bond. This furry friend is not just a large and fluffy companion for Anya, but can actually see glimpses into the future.

Combining this with Anya's mind-reading abilities, the two form a highly entertaining pair. Coming from a history of lab experimentation, Bond has seen some of the worst that humanity has to offer. In fact, that is the reason he can see flashes of the future.

Project Apple

Bond when he first appears in the anime.

To aid in warfare, Ostania founded Project Apple. Through this initiative, Ostanian government would perform continuous experiments on animals to produce highly intelligent military animals. The test subjects were kept in terrible conditions, treated horribly, were fed slop and frequently died due to the nature of the experiments.

The pace of the project was quite fast, with many animals going in and out. Eventually, the project was shut down, which left a large number of the animals behind. Some animals were put down, while others ended up on the black market. Due to the cruel experiments, some animals gained unnatural abilities; Bond, or "Subject 8", is one of them. The results of his experimentation is the ability to see moments in the future.

Bond Before the Forgers

Anya when Bond saves her in the manga.

We first see Bond (unnamed at the time) locked away in a cell too small for his large size. He and other dogs are all in cells, barking frantically. The suspicion of these dogs is that they are bought to be bomb dogs in the war. All the dogs in this place are in rough shape, and get rough treatment too. The conditions leave the dogs either barking frantically or whimpering in sadness. They get fed gruel and are left in claustrophobic conditions. However, Bond is no ordinary dog, for we see him having a vision of a happy Forger family smiling down at him. This, in his poor living conditions, gives him hope for better things to come.

Bond is a very smart dog. When two of the terrorists are walking him and another dog, they say as much. We see Bond's intelligence when his master is getting a coffee and their walk is paused. He sees a little boy running down the street, when suddenly he breaks loose from his walker and runs towards the boy at high speed. He grabs the boy by the collar and pulls him out of the way of a falling board. His reflexes and quick thinking are admirable.

A Dynamic Duo

Bond with Forger family

As a reward for earning a Stella (and extra protection), Loid and Yor take Anya to choose a pet dog. While deciding, she sees Bond walking down the street with the terrorists from earlier. Since Anya is able to read minds, she can see Bond's vision of the future where they are together. This excites her, for she knows they are meant to meet and she chases after him on her own. Subsequently, the terrorists catch her and plan to have her killed. Bond recognizes her from his own vision and helps her escape. The two have been inseparable ever since. Anya names him Bond, after her favorite spy cartoon.

Anya and Bond are both subjects of experimentation which created their superhuman abilities, a sad reality they have in common. The two form a powerful pair, in that whatever Bond sees, so does Anya by reading his mind. We first see this when the terrorists keep Anya to kill her. She reads Bond's mind, which showed a phone ringing in the future. She now has the knowledge of her escape window, which she and Bond use to run. Bond's future visions server her well again when she sees Loid dying in a bomb blast. To prevent this from happening, the two find the location of the bomb to help him. After leaving a warning for Loid that she wrote in tomato sauce, the bomb gets diffused and Loid survives, all thanks to the powers of her and Bond.
