Splitgate is a two-year-old game that is finally getting the attention it deserves. The sandbox portal FPS did not have a very big player base at launch. In fact, the game was essentially dead for a long period of time. Fast forward to the summer of 2021 and the developers raised enough money to continue development and plan for an official release.

Competition in the FPS market and the fact that the innovative game was being developed by a small studio hindered the number of people that were willing to give it a try. However, the recent drought in the FPS scene gave the studio an opportunity to bring in more players, and the community is growing exponentially. All of these beginners will have a lot to learn about Splitgate. This guide will outline 10 advanced tips to help newcomers improve at the game.

10 Portal Faking

Splitgate Gameplay Portals

Just like any other competitive game, players will want to keep their opponents guessing. While portals should be used to traverse the map as quickly as possible, they offer an instant distraction. If an enemy is in sight near a blue panel, shoot a portal near the player and "fake" the port.

The enemy will fixate on the portal, providing a great opportunity to catch the player off guard. Throw a few fakes in to keep the opposing team guessing. It is also a good idea to portal after hitting a few shots to finish off the player. Skilled Splitgate players are masters of deception.

9 Practice Triple Portaling

Triple portaling involves using the second portal as a stand and shooting a third portal. Gamers can balance on the second portal by taking just one step through it. This effectively allows the user to instantly portal to a third location.

Opponents will struggle to finish off anyone that has the tactic mastered because they can portal to safety or use the method to change peek positions in an instant. Those still new to the game will want to practice triple portaling as much as possible so that they can use it in every match.

8 Portal Placement And Strategy

Players should always be looking for the panels that are in unexpected locations. Putting a portal right next to an enemy player will usually not turn out well, unless the portal is placed to fake the opponent. Portals are best utilized as flank tools.

The first thing anyone should do in a match is place a portal far away and a second one nearby to push power weapons and create advantageous angles. One of the most proven methods, when kill chasing, is leaving a portal near a key POI on the map. People can cycle between the portal in the center of the map or near a power weapon to dip in and out of the action.

7 Customize Reticles And Change Reticle While Sprinting

One of the most important settings to change is the reticle while sprinting. It is a triangle by default, which can make aiming difficult right after the sprint animation. For consistency purposes, gamers will want the sprint reticle to match the hip fire reticle.

Also, it may help to test out different reticles to see which one fits your particular playstyle. There are a ton of different options to choose from in-game.

6 Using EMPs To Destroy Enemy Portals

Grenades do not cause damage in Splitgate. Instead, they create an AOE that closes opposing players' portals. It is a good idea to use these in strategic spots to avoid flanks and keep the opponents away from contested areas.

The grenades will penetrate through walls and obstacles too. People need to keep in mind that the throw velocity is quite slow and will take some practice to master. Make sure to use grenades periodically to disrupt the opposing team.

5 Practice Using The DMR And Pistol

In the beta, these are the two main starting weapons. Learning how to use them will have an immense impact on gameplay. The DMR is simple enough to use, but the pistol requires more practice. Because the pistol is single fire, gamers will have to work on rapidly tapping the trigger while keeping the reticle on target.

This pairing will most likely be the default at launch, so beginners will need to get accustomed to using them to enjoy playing the completed version of the game when it is released.

4 Melee Tactics

Unlike similar FPS titles, a melee to the back will not one-hit kill an enemy. Instead, it will cause anywhere from 50-100 damage. A point-blank hit deals 50 damage. Melee attacks with more velocity deal more damage.

To get a one-hit melee kill, players need to fall from a high spot on the map and melee as they fall. Gamers can also jump toward an enemy then melee for slightly more damage. Combining a well-timed melee with gunfire is a good way to win close-range engagements.

3 Weapon Swap Speed

Weapons swap incredibly fast in Splitgate, so players will want to get ready to change weapons at the end of a clip. When using the sniper, it is actually faster to swap weapons and shoot a secondary than fire consecutive shots. With some practice, this can give people a marked DPS advantage.

For that reason, a sniper DMR combo can be extremely dominant if the user can fire, swap, and hit their shots. This is not an easy tactic, and it will take a lot of trial and error to master.

2 Remember To Close Portals

Splitgate Gameplay tips

Far too many beginners leave their portals open in the same location and don't even use them. There are a limited number of panels to use, and taking up unnecessary space could prevent teammates from getting out of dangerous situations. Closing these portals every few seconds will help the team as a whole.

Similarly, make sure to remember which key is mapped to which portal. Making the mistake of pressing the wrong key bind could result in imminent death. Portals are undoubtedly the most effective way to flee when you are a few shots from death.

1 Fight The Urge To ADS

Splitgate Xbox Series X PS5

With almost every weapon, gamers should only ADS at range. It is harder to hit shots on approaching enemies while in the ADS animation. Firing from the hip will result in more versatility and better accuracy at close to medium range.

Although, ADS is always better at very long ranges. On the other hand, everyone should ADS or quick scope with the sniper. While aiming down sight, the sniper actually has a larger bullet hitbox. Players will hit considerably more shots with the sniper if they ADS.
