Splatoon 2 is officially announced for the Switch with a reveal trailer that confirms new weapons, outfits, game modes, and a summer 2017 release window.

Splatoon has been a big hit at the end of the Wii U's lifecycle, so it was no surprise that the squid kids showed up in the reveal trailer for Nintendo's upcoming console, the Nintendo Switch. Since that reveal, fans have been speculating about whether that gameplay was from a Switch port or some kind of updated deluxe edition with new maps. As it turns out, the reality is even more exciting for fans of the new franchise...

The sequel is aiming for a 2017 launch, so unfortunately players won't be able to get their hands on it when the Switch arrives on March 3. Splatoon fans can expect new outfits, weapons, game modes, and more. It is also a safe bet that the competitive game will make great use of the newly-announced Nintendo Online paid services. It wasn't confirmed, but it sounds like users may need to pay the Nintendo Online subscription fee in order to play online Splatoon matches.

Hopefully that increased cost won't be too high of a barrier of entry for the majority of players. Nintendo joining Microsoft and Sony in paid online services eventually seemed inevitable, so it will be very interesting to see how well the service performs and if joining games with friends becomes any easier for Nintendo fans.

Splatoon 2 can be played with the Joycon controller, the Switch pro controller, and players will be able to aim using gyro controls. Local and online multiplayer options will be available, as well.

Splatoon 2 is aiming for a summer 2017 release for the Nintendo Switch.
