Highlights

  • Spider-Man 4 may introduce Miles Morales to the MCU, pleasing fans and resolving internal disputes between Marvel and Sony.
  • Tom Holland is protective of character and agrees with a more grounded approach, conflicting with Sony's desires.
  • The addition of Miles Morales to Spider-Man 4 may signal a compromise between Marvel's grounded storytelling and Sony's multiverse interests.

While the Spider-Man 4 news has been inconclusive concerning what direction the film will take due to behind-the-scenes disagreements, a new rumor suggests that fans will likely get the long-awaited debut of Miles Morales.

While Tom Holland's Spider-Man Home trilogy was a massive success, Holland's return for Spider-Man 4 was conditional as the star stated he was protective of the character. As a result, Holland would agree with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige in wanting a more grounded direction for the character going forward, a resolution that stood at odds with what Sony executives, who collaborate with Marvel Studios on Holland's Spider-Man films, wanted for the next movie.

Due to this internal split, rumors have been making the rounds since Feige confirmed Spider-Man 4 was in the works. A recent one from a trusty source suggests that fans are getting one highly-requested MCU debut in the upcoming film and seems to imply that both camps are on board. According to reliable source Daniel Richtman, Miles Morales will finally make his live-action and MCU debuts in the upcoming Spider-Man 4 alongside Holland's Peter Parker. Additionally, this seems to be the first step in Miles getting his solo project set within the MCU and is a joint decision that involved both Feige and Amy Pascal.

Richtman also previously revealed Sony wanted Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield back for Spider-Man 4, which seemed to be the primary basis of contention between the Marvel Studios and Sony execs. While Marvel Studios wanted to tell a more grounded story on par with projects like Echo and Daredevil: Born Again, Sony was more interested in producing another multiverse movie in the vein of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which featured all three live-action Spider-Men in a spectacular close to the first Home trilogy. Adding Miles Morales to the equation could be a compromise, drawing fans to the new film with his long-awaited debut while not committing to multiversal shenanigans.

Things have come a long way since Feige insisted that Spider-Man 4's story was set back in early 2023, and all sorts of things have come into play that seem to indicate the original plan won’t be the one that makes it to theaters after all. Feige's fight to rescue the MCU from its lowest point seemingly opposes Sony's plans for their one successful Marvel property. The high-profile failures of projects like Morbius and Madame Web probably make doubling down on the sure-fire success formula that made Spider-Man: No Way Home so profitable seem like Sony's best course of action. Miles Morales feels like the best of both worlds here, especially following the surge in popularity with Sony's PlayStation user base after his appearance in his game title and then the mainline Spider-Man 2. Miles Morales' MCU debut seems well-timed and could draw the eyes that Pascal and Co. want.

With the latest Avengers 5 news revealing plans for Kang post-Jonathan Majors, there might be room for Spider-Man 4 to retain some of the scale that Sony seems intent on injecting into the mix. Fans can only really wait and see how that pans out in terms of the whole narrative for Spider-Man 4, but now they have one more thing to look forward to.
