While there are plenty of known AAA PS5 games in development, there are some games that haven’t been confirmed that fans know have to be getting games. Spider-Man on PS4, its Miles Morales follow-up, and the teases in each game show how the Webhead’s tenure on the platform is far from over.

In fact, if all goes well, it could be that Spider-Man serves as the final card in Sony’s 2022 deck. It seems Sony is going all-in with 2022 releases, as it’s been reported that Horizon: Forbidden West has been delayed to Q1 2022. The wait for it isn’t that much longer, and that’s a good way to kick off the year. God of War is set to follow some time next year, and there’s plenty of room for Spidey to swing in for the holidays, giving some of Sony’s biggest IPs all new releases next year.

Is Spider-Man 2 on PS5 in Development?

The simple answer is that it is unconfirmed, but it’s clear that Insomniac has another Spider-Man entry in mind. The teases at the end of both games suggest that the Osborns have something big building, that the Lizard may crop up, Green Goblin is especially likely, and Spider-Man fans may even encounter Venom in some form. While neither Sony nor Insomniac have mentioned anything on it, it’s almost a sure bet that it’s in some state of development.

That’s especially true considering a since-deleted social media post from Nadji Jeter, the Miles Morales actor in Spider-Man and his titular sequel, showed him in mocap gear. It could be for anything, but the safest bet once again seems to be Spider-Man 2. And while this may seem surprising since Spider-Man released in 2018 and Miles Morales released in 2020, Insomniac Games has been putting out titles practically every year. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart just released this year, for example, and it’s likely that this Spider-Man sequel was in proper development before even Miles Morales released.

Spider-Man 2 Releasing on PS5 in 2022?

Marvel's Spider-Man

Insomniac’s release schedule would suggest that a game is releasing in 2022, and while nothing has been revealed yet, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear about the game later this year/early next year. A Holiday 2022 release (especially with PS5 bundles) would mimic the initial release of Spider-Man in 2018. Not to mention, a new Spider-Man game every two years (2018, 2020, 2022) is not only possible, but somewhat poetic.

Of course, this is all speculation. There’s no promise that Jeter was posting mocap for Miles Morales, there’s no promise Insomniac started as early as it could, and there’s no promise the game is as far along as one hopes. However, if the stars align, Spider-Man 2 could release in 2022. It’s not the surest best, as there are many variables, but it’s one many may be willing to take.

Following Horizon Forbidden West and God of War is not a task for any typical Sony IP; it’s a job only befitting the Webheads, Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

Spider-Man 2 is not confirmed to be in development.
