Spider-Man 2 was an unexpected surprise during the PlayStation showcase, being high on many wishlists but generally thought to be an unrealistic expectation. However, Insomniac Games brought its all, revealing not only Spider-Man 2 but also a Wolverine game. According to Spider-Man 2’s Venom voice actor, the game is going to be pretty hefty too, explaining its 2023 release window.

Insomniac Games didn’t share a ton of information about Spider-Man 2 during the PlayStation Showcase, but what the company did reveal is significant. Primarily, it debuted Venom as one of the game’s antagonists, with voice-over being performed presumably by Kraven the Hunter, another one of Spider-Man’s infamous villains. Since the trailer debuted, a few accessory details have emerged, including a small tidbit of information from Venom voice actor Tony Todd.

Responding to a fan on Twitter, Todd stated that he’s known about the game for two months now, and that it is “massive.” According to Todd, that size is why the game won’t be released until 2023, a relatively distant window, though an unsurprising one considering how many games Insomniac is currently working on. Todd didn’t elaborate much further than that, leaving fans with more questions than answers about what the game will hold.

Considering the success of Spider-Man and Miles Morales, it wouldn’t come as a shock to see Spider-Man 2 grow in scope. There will, presumably, be two protagonists now that Miles has been featured in his own spin-off game, which will hopefully more content to split between the duo. Plus, the Venom story already seems like one that can justify a longer runtime, considering how it's been teased in the games up until this point.

Of course, 2023 is still a long way off, and there’s been no indication of when the game will land during the year. Notably, 2023 will be the fifth anniversary of Spider-Man’s PS4 launch, which could be a nice target for Insomniac to shoot for. Anniversary can help generate buzz for a project, at least if Skyrim Anniversary Edition is any indication.

Now, it’s a waiting game for fans of the franchise. Luckily, there’s plenty of Spider-Man media to take in slated for the next few years, from Marvel films to new comics and beyond. While superheroes, in general, have had a spotlight for the past decade or so, it’s a particularly great time to be a fan of Spider-Man, assuming everything lives up to expectations.

Spider-Man 2 is in development for PS5.
