The next generation of video games is right around the corner, and big changes are coming. However, if Spider-Man: Miles Morales is any proof, the next generation may be smaller in one particular way; a good way.
Miles Morales is launching as a PlayStation 5 launch title on November 12, 2020. But the game is also coming to the PlayStation 4. The file size has been revealed for the two games, leading to an interesting revelation.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales on the PS5 will be 50 GB, while the PS4 version of the new Spider-Man game will be 52 GB, according to the official game listing on PlayStation's website. That's a difference of only 2 GB, but the fact that the version on the next-generation console is smaller is certainly intriguing. The PS5 version will, of course, come with the better performance over the PS4, with 4k resolution and 60 frames per second. Yet, the "better" version of the game will be smaller in terms of size.
Fans and developers have been worried about game file size for the Xbox Series X and PS5, as more memory is often required with the games taking on more technology and features. But it looks like at least for Miles Morales, the PS5 version was able to compress and optimize the size of the game. It's possible that the PS5 will be more efficient with compressing files, which would be exciting for fans who don't want to have to uninstall various games whenever a new title has been purchased.
File size of games can be a big deal with fans, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's massive update sizes being a sore spot for many, for example. Faster load times, 4K resolution, and higher frame-rates are all features that the next generation of consoles can boast, but smaller file sizes thanks to optimal compression would also be very helpful.
The original Spider-Man on the PS4 was not small, coming in at about 45 GB as one of the larger PS4 games. Miles Morales is slightly larger, but those who are switching to the PS5 may be able to look forward to slightly smaller files for more than just this Spider-Man title.
While there are still some mysteries regarding the next Spider-Man game, now that the size has been revealed, there is a lot known about Miles Morales as well. The exclusive PlayStation title is shaping up to be one of the must-have games of the holiday period, and especially since Microsoft no longer has Halo Infinite for the Xbox Series X at launch, Miles Morales is a selling point for the PS5.
