Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s take on Venom is a hit with players, and even Tom Hardy has nice things to say about Insomniac’s take on the symbiotic super villain. Venom is one of Spider-Man’s most beloved and iconic enemies, and has terrorized both the web-slinger and his fans across countless video games, comics, and movies. Naturally, gamers were intrigued when the slimy black sybmiote appeared in the post-credits scene of Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Venom’s eventual emergence from the shadows in Spider-Man 2’s initial reveal trailer was met with a chilling ovation.

This excitement only grew when it was announced that Tony Todd, the actor behind famous villains like the original Candyman and Zoom from The Flash, was lending his distinct gravelly tone to Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Todd had been a popular choice to voice Venom among fans for years, and he would frequently express his enthusiasm for the role leading up to Spider-Man 2’s eventual release on the PlayStation 5 earlier this month. Now that the game is out in the wild, fans are sharing their support for Tony Todd’s performance, including another actor who recently brought Venom to life.

Spider-Man 2 Dev Comments on Whether a Venom Spinoff Game Could Happen

On the eve of Spider-Man 2's release on PS5, the game's narrative director is discussing the potential of a Venom spin-off title.

A few days ago, Tom Hardy shared a black-and-white photo of Tony Todd on his Instagram account, with a comment describing the Spider-Man 2 voice actor as a “legend” - presumably for his performance as Venom. This compliment carries extra weight to it as Hardy plays Eddie Brock and the Venom symbiote in both Sony’s live-action Marvel films and a brief cameo at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. He is set to reprise his role in a third, currently untitled Venom movie, which is currently set to release on July 12, 2024.

Tom Hardy isn’t the only Venom-related celebrity who has commented on Marvel's Spider-Man 2, as legendary comic book artist and writer Todd McFarlane praised Venom’s design during this summer’s Comic-Con 2023 event. Players seem to share this sentiment, as Spider-Man 2 has already become one of Insomniac’s most acclaimed titles after less than a week. Spider-Man 2 senior narrative director Jon Paquette recently hinted at a Venom-centric spin-off game if enough fans want it, meaning that gamers might see more of the Lethal Protector in Insomniac’s universe.

In the meantime, players can’t get enough of Spider-Man 2’s new take on Venom, and a big part of the villain’s appeal is Tony Todd’s chilling performance as a malevolent symbiote and its host seeking revenge on the heroes of New York City. Tom Hardy knows a thing or two about playing Venom, and now he’s seemingly given his seal of approval to the Spider-Man 2 version of the deadly Symbiote.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is available exclusively for PS5.
