Someone claiming to be a playtester working on Marvel's Spider-Man 2 leaks that the upcoming action game could reference a specific classic Venom comic book story. What with Marvel's Spider-Man being a comic book-inspired game series, it would be no surprise to hear that Insomniac is drawing influence from and referencing the source material. For fans of Amazing Spider-Man and Venom, in particular, this is one potential Marvel's Spider-Man 2 story worth getting excited about.

Very little is currently known about Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which is tentatively planned for release later this year on PlayStation 5. What has been confirmed that Venom, one of Spider-Man's most notorious villains and allies, will be featured in the game. Alongside Venom will be the Spider-Man pair of Peter Parker and Miles Morales, each returning from their respective games. Given Insomniac's Spider-Man games take place in a unique universe, different from the Marvel comic book and film universes, what happens in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is entirely unknown.

This rumor originates from someone claiming to be a playtester on Marvel's Spider-Man 2, though they provide no substantive evidence of their role. What they claim is that they playtested a part of the game seemingly referencing a key part of Venom's origin story. They say that in an early part of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, both Parker and Morales are "scuffling" to catch a notable villain in a green ski mask. They say they believe this character "looks a lot like the Sin-Eater."

The Sin-Eater is the main villain of what's known as The Death of Jean DeWolff arc of Amazing Spider-Man, published in late 1985 and early 1986. Sin-Eater is a killer targeting what they believe to be corrupt figures of authority, many of who end up being friends with Spider-Man and Daredevil's alter egos. The arc takes place during the iconic Black Suit Spider-Man arc, when Parker is wearing the Venom symbiote before it becomes Venom. More importantly, the Sin-Eater story is the spark that sets Eddie Brock on the path of becoming Venom.

The supposed playtester doesn't provide any further information, unfortunately. Even if the rumor is real and the green-masked villain is the Sin-Eater, it's difficult to speculate what their role in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 might be. They could be as important of a figure as in Amazing Spider-Man's Death of Jean DeWolff story, or they could be a simple nod to the comic books and otherwise be irrelevant to the new game's overarching plot.

Without delving too far into spoilers from the first two Marvel's Spider-Man games, it's already clear that Venom's origin story has been dramatically altered. Insomniac isn't telling the Spider-Man story fans know from the comic books. What awaits Peter Parker, Miles Morales, Eddie Brock, and the current holder of the Venom symbiote in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 remains to be seen.
