Highlights

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2 could benefit from a longer runtime to provide players with a more complete and engaging experience outside of endgame content.
  • The post-game/free roam content in Spider-Man 2 is underwhelming and lacking in replay value, compared to other open-world superhero games like Batman Arkham trilogy.
  • Fans would like to see more cameos and appearances from other well-known Marvel heroes in the Spider-Man universe.

Marvel's Spider-Man (2018) was released to high levels of praise and reception, providing fans with the ultimate web-swinging experience at the time. Since the announcement of its sequel at the PlayStation Showcase 2021, fans wondered how it would operate differently compared to its predecessor across the board. Fortunately, Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has managed to double down on everything fans had previously experienced, improving upon traversal, fluidity in transitions, and even outdoing the 2018 entry's combat experience by implementing game-changing abilities between Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

Players will encounter an impressive roster of villains in Spider-Man 2, and here is who they all are.

While this is the case, there are multiple changes that a third entry within the series can make to satisfy fans based on some of Marvel's Spider-Man 2's downsides. Acknowledging the high standards and expectations set by both titles, fans will be expecting a potential Marvel's Spider-Man 3 to produce the most complete Spider-Man experience yet.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

5 Longer Runtime

Spider-Man 2 Hours To Beat - 15/20 Hours

Miles gliding

Despite it being clear that Insomniac's motto for a majority of titles, especially the Marvel's Spider-Man series, is quality over quantity, some fans view this negatively. While Marvel's Spider-Man (2018) was also in the same ballpark in terms of game length, its replay value in revisiting combat arenas and hideouts, gave players a greater incentive to continue playing once the main story was complete.

Considering the presence of multiple villains and two main characters in Peter and Miles, it was a surprise to see the sequel not extend the runtime even just a little more than previously. With a third installment highly likely, it would be beneficial for Insomniac to increase the number of missions, activities, and provide more to engage with, creating a long-lasting experience outside of endgame content or New Game+.

4 Greater Replay Value

Game Cover

As mentioned, although there are many improvements and implementations developers at Insomniac have included in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, once complete, there is little to nothing extra to be done in each region. Since there is no option to replay Hunter Bases and a large majority of the random crimes in the endgame revolve around stopping remaining Symbiote-infected civilians, there is more of a sense of repetition than variety.

7 Biggest Improvements In Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Insomniac Games makes full use of the PS5 for Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and the game features tons of improvements over its predecessor.

Taking Rocksteady's Batman Arkham trilogy into consideration, there is plenty for players to enjoy once the main story and side quests are done, as there is a plethora of combat and stealth challenges available. While this can be added to Marvel's Spider-Man 2 at a later date or alongside the inevitable New Game+ addition, fans would be pleased to see greater replay value ready to go at launch for Insomniac's next web-swinging game.

3 Cameos/Fellow Heroes

Marvel's Spider-Man & Marvel's Wolverine Connection Confirmed

Wolverine and Dr. Strange reference

Considering the high level of the threat posed by Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, it is no surprise to see that fans have voiced complaints about immersion. While it may very well come down to licenses for certain heroes among the Avengers or other street-level heroes in Marvel, it can be felt many times throughout the game's duration that Miles and Peter are the only two heroes in all of New York.

Despite the references and hints toward particular heroes such as Doctor Strange, Daredevil, Wolverine with an unlockable suit, and more between Marvel's Spider-Man (2018) and Marvel's Spider-Man 2, the latter stages of the story include dire circumstances. With the city threatened by Venom, there is no doubt that other heroes would be on alert. As Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Wolverine IPs are confirmed to be in the same world, hope remains that a third entry will include other well-known Marvel heroes.

2 Equal Focus On Peter & Miles

Pete and Miles in CGI Trailer

Although players have the option to play as either Peter or Miles in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, each maintaining their own unique side missions and activities, there appears to be a greater focus on Peter. Considering the fact that this stands as a direct sequel to Marvel's Spider-Man (2018) which had Peter Parker at its center, its sequel follows the same path as most of the main story's beats revolve around Peter and the Symbiote suit.

Spider-Man 2: All Mysterium Locations

By completing all the Mysteriums, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 players will unlock a new suit for Miles.

In terms of of side quests, players appear to have favored more of Peter's in comparison to Miles', as quests alongside Yuri now known as Wraith are now present instead of some of the school 'fetch quests' of Miles. Since Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales gave players complete control over Miles and his story with Ganke, Rio, and Phin, it could explain why the character has been given more of a back seat on this occasion, but a third game must deliver a strong story for both characters.

1 One Or Two Villains

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 features more than 5 villains

Venom

Revisiting the mention of the game's short length, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 includes a large number of villains, some of which do not pose a threat to either of the main characters. While Insomniac manages to implement multiple popular Spider-Man villains without the game feeling overcrowded, the transition from Kraven to Peter and his Symbiote suit, to the Symbiote returning to Harry and him ultimately becoming Venom, all occur at a breakneck speed.

With the inevitable release of Marvel's Spider-Man 3,considering the build-up of Norman Osborn and Doc Ock as villains, Insomniac would benefit from streamlining and narrowing the focus on one major story beat and just a few villains to overcome.
