The creative director of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has recently revealed that the game’s map will be roughly twice the size of the one featured in the previous entry. This would make Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 feature one of the largest open-world titles out there, as the first one already featured a huge explorable area filled with interesting activities.

Released back in 2018, the first Spider-Man game for PS4 was hailed as one of the best entries in the franchise, as it really captured the experience of playing the famous Spidey. One of the reasons for that, and also one of the greatest joys of the game was the freedom of web-swinging around Manhattan. Compared to Insomniac Games’ previous title Sunset Overdrive, Spider-Man was already at least four to six times bigger, and now, gamers can expect a considerable increase in map size once more as they gear up to play the sequel.

Insomniac Games creative director Bryan Intihar spoke more about the size of the upcoming title in a recent interview with the Japanese media outlet Famitsu. According to him, Queens and Brooklyn will be added as new explorable areas to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This change will roughly increase the size of the playable map by twice, as Manhattan will remain playable.

These two new areas are mostly residential and won’t feature as many skyscrapers as Manhattan does, so they will offer a fairly different gameplay experience when visiting them, and will also have a “different charm,” Intihar explained. The creative director also affirmed that the devs have some pretty memorable situations prepared for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, citing a battle above the river between two cities as an example. With improved traversal mechanics, such as increased movement speed when swinging around, gamers will move between areas with more ease, too.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s players will be able to explore the massive city of New York as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales this time, each one with different abilities, especially since Parker will be fused with the Venom symbiote. So, Spider-Man 2 will feature a new character-switching system. Gamers will be able to switch between the two characters manually at essentially any point in the game, except during missions. Some quests, for instance, will be exclusive to one character or the other. Regardless of that, having characters that offer distinct gameplay experiences and a huge explorable area sounds like a very exciting deal for the new Spider-Man game.
