Sony is hosting its PS5 "The Future of Gaming" event today, to start in just under four hours. While no games have yet to be confirmed for the PS5 presentation, fans have their own lists of unannounced games and sequels they'd love to see. Near the top of that list, if not at the top, is a sequel to Insomniac Games' Marvel's Spider-Man. Fans may end up waiting for Spider-Man 2 longer than they thought, however, as Insomniac's next game is reportedly something else entirely.

The news comes from Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier in a now-deleted post on Twitter. Another Twitter user asked whether Spider-Man 2 will be shown during today's PS5 event. Schreier picked up on the question and responded, "Insomniac's got another game coming first!" In other words, Spider-Man 2 is not Insomniac's next game. Expect to hear news about another Insomniac game first.

That's not to say that Spider-Man 2 isn't in development, of course. Rumors point to the contrary. Insomniac is a substantially-sized studio and is more than capable of working on more than one major project at a time. However, if its current game is a big game then Insomniac is unlikely to release two such titles near each other. Perhaps Spider-Man 2 will be targeted for 2021 or even 2022 instead of the PS5's launch.

Regardless of its release date, Spider-Man 2 could still potentially be announced at any time. It'd certainly be a very exciting announcement if it was made during today's PS5 event. Insomniac could come out and announce its current game with a relatively near release date and then follow it up with a Spider-Man 2 announcement for a later date. That might be a bit too optimistic, however.

As for what Insomniac's other game might be, there are rumors that another Ratchet & Clank game is being developed. It's been four years since the remake of Ratchet & Clank was released and seven years since an entirely new Ratchet & Clank came out. Since the franchise is so near and dear to Insomniac, it wouldn't be a surprise to have the studio revisit it.

Insomniac could also surprise its fans and announce an entirely new IP. Given the success of Spider-Man on the PS4, the studio certainly deserves the opportunity to make a game that it wants. However, with Insomniac's recent acquisition by Sony, its options may be more limited. Whatever Insomniac's current plans are, they're likely to be revealed during today's PS5 event. It's going to be very exciting.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is currently just a rumor.
