  • Voice actor Tony Todd hinted at a potential Venom-centric spin-off of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which may be targeting a 2025 release, according to a leak.
  • The leak revealed a Venom project called "Lethal Protector" is in the works, with a scope allegedly similar to Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
  • Tony Todd, who voices Venom in Spider-Man 2, made mention of "2 major projects" with Peter Parker's voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal, implying the existence of a follow-up.

The voice actor behind Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has potentially alluded to the existence of a Venom spin-off game. The major Insomniac data breach in December 2023 revealed that the studio is planning an interstitial game based on the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 villain, but this may be the first time it has been referenced by someone who would most likely be involved with the project.

The Insomniac leak publicized the entire roadmap of the studio for the next decade, revealing not only huge Marvel projects but also planned releases for the next Ratchet and Clank game and new IPs. However, one of the more surprising projects on the chart was a Venom spin-off game subtitled Lethal Protector that was scheduled to release in 2025. The scope of the game is allegedly in line with 2020's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and it will likely build up the story for Insomniac's eventual Spider-Man 3.

A group of dataminers potentially leaks the very first images of Marvel's Spider-Man 3, despite the Insomniac game being years away.

The hints for a Venom-centred project did exist before the leak, as the character was briefly playable in Spider-Man 2 with his own unique animations, movesets, and finishers. Moreover, voice actor Tony Todd previously let slip that Spider-Man 2 uses only 10% of his lines as Venom. Now, Todd has seemingly alluded to the Venom spin-off in a recent tweet addressed to Peter Parker's voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal. While wishing Lowenthal well on his birthday, Todd implies that they've completed "2 major projects and counting," one of which is obviously Spider-Man 2, with the other potentially being Venom: Lethal Protector.

It's important to distinguish that Todd specifically uses the word "completed," which possibly suggests that he and Lowenthal have finished their work on the project. If Insomniac is targeting a 2025 release for Venom: Lethal Protector, voice-over work for the game should be completed by now, and Todd's comment may just be the first tease towards it. What strengthens the notion further is that, apart from Spider-Man 3 and the Venom spin-off, the likelihood of both Venom and Spider-Man appearing in the other leaked Insomniac games seems low.

While the reasoning may be sound, this information should still be taken with a grain of salt. Insomniac has yet to confirm the existence of a Venom spin-off title, and the data breach could've affected the studio's release plans. However, the odds are stacking up for Tony Todd's Venom to make a return sometime before Spider-Man 3, and, if the actor's comments hold true, potentially alongside Yuri Lowenthal's Peter Parker in some capacity. If a 2025 release is indeed on the table, Venom: Lethal Protector might be announced at a possible September PlayStation Showcase.
