Spelunky 2, the sequel to one of game designer Derek Yu's most well-known projects, is nearing completion and is preparing for its upcoming launch. With Spelunky 2's launch on the PlayStation 4 only a month away, developer and publisher Mossmouth has put up a Steam page for Spelunky 2 for customers to visit and wishlist.

Originally announced in late 2017, Spelunky 2 has players take control of the daughter of the original protagonist, who has taken up her father's hat and is now doing some spelunking of her own on the Moon, hoping to find treasure and her missing family. Spelunky 2 builds off the original while adding all-new features.

One of the most exciting features, which was revealed back in 2018, is the ability to play with friends online as opposed to the couch only multiplayer from the original game. The Steam page also mentions features such as ridable mounts, deeper mysteries that may require the community to work together to unravel, and "possibly more eggplants."

Spelunky 2 was originally scheduled to release last year, but Yu underestimated how much work would go into the scope and detail of the game being made and pushed Spelunky 2's release to 2020. Fans now know that it will release on the PlayStation 4 on September 15, but the PC version on Steam will take a few weeks longer.

Yu said in a tweet that the reason for this is to ensure that Spelunky 2 works well on PC, and this testing will include making sure the online multiplayer works properly. There's no word on if the multiplayer features cross-play between the PC and PS4 versions.

Spelunky 2 releases September 15th for the PlayStation 4, with the PC release releasing "no later than a few weeks" after the PS4 launch.
