The hot new battle royale, Spellbreak, has players flying around the map as powerful spellcasters, capable of truly incredible things compared to classic shooters like Warzone and PUBG. For new players, this can be incredibly overwhelming.

With 6 different elemental gauntlets to choose from, an experience system that unlocks talents which each change the gameplay, and a plethora of runes that dynamically shift mobility and map traversal, there’s a lot for new players to unpack. With developers, Proletariat, planning near-constant updates for the new game, players will need to get the basics down quickly in order to keep up.

10 Use The Practice Island

Many players will instantly jump into the free gameplay after completing the tutorial. While this can be fruitful for learning quickly, the tutorial barely skims the surface of the many items for players to pick up around the map. Changing the game mode to the Practice Island will give newbies a playground to test out each gauntlet, rune, and class. With enemies to shoot, the ability to level up to test class features, and a plethora of structures to jump around, players will be able to gain a feel for the important movement aspect of the game and test out each feature they are bound to encounter in an actual match. Use this space to figure out the most comfortable way to play and the best system for an individual's set up.

9 Start With One Main Gauntlet

New players don’t need to be masters of each gauntlet. Playing around with each element on the practice island and figuring out which feels natural right away is a great place to start. Becoming comfortable with one element is much easier than trying to constantly shift between different strategies and playstyles. Early players will likely have a lot of luck with the stone shaper class and gauntlet. With powerful attacks and armor boosts from the very beginning of every match, this makes sense as a starting gauntlet for new players.

8 Mobility Is King

Unlike other battle royales with vehicles or building options like in Fortnite or PUBG, Spellbreak has unique runes that each offer different mobility options for the player that make the game feel SO good. With the flight rune that allows players to soar through the sky, the dash rune that pushes players quickly in any direction on a quick recharge, and an invisibility rune for safer traveling and escapes, players have a multitude of options to change around their play-styles.

On the practice island, players should practice with every rune, testing out their movement capabilities as well as how they pair up with different gauntlets and their levitation powers. Nothing is worse than jumping into a fight only to end up immediately falling into a hole and dying due to a lack of mana.

7 Learn How To Counter

Spellbreak is pretty balanced right now. Each gauntlet has its strengths and weaknesses. The frost gauntlet is great at long range sniping, but when up close it becomes unwieldy and difficult to use. The toxic gauntlet is great for tight spaces like castle ruins and twisting trenches but isn’t effective at long range or for opponents in the air. The stone gauntlet is deadly for two players on the same flat and enclosed stretch of land but is easily outclassed by jumping onto tight platforms of varying heights. The wind gauntlet alone deals low damage and can be difficult to aim. Lightning deals more damage the more it hits, so mobility is incredibly important. Fire is really strong, but that’s something everyone has to deal with. Figure out what gauntlets enemies are using, and learn how to turn the game in your favor.

6 Learn About Each Area Of The Map

Spellbreak’s map has a wide variety of biomes with different landscapes that benefit different elements. The desert at the top of the map is great for mobile classes like fire and wind but difficult for stone due to its many levels and tight spaces. Each area of the map has spawn locations for chests and treasure as well, learning where epic chests are likely to spawn and knowing where to drop early so that these chests are easy for players to snag is important for taking a quick head start at the beginning of any match.

5 Know What Treasure Really Matters

Many new players think that better gear will make the difference between survival and exile. However, for the most part, only two gear options truly make a difference when a player's skill level is low. The first important piece of gear for players to pick up is a secondary gauntlet. Having two spell options and two sorceries to use can really make the difference in a life or death situation. The other is a belt for armor. Having an extra 20 to 100 health can mean surviving anywhere from 3 to 30 extra hits. For new players who are less skilled at avoiding hits and dealing damage, this extra time can make all the difference in the world.

4 Know What Treasure Is The Icing On Top

Every player should be picking up better gear whenever they can, but when a powerful alpha player is looting a castle, it’s best for newer breakers to keep their distance. Scrolls can make a big difference when players have good talents, but they also leave players incredibly susceptible to attack, and should only be used when the area is safe. Boots and amulets can really help players, but a shiny pair of boots isn’t worth half a player's health bar. If a fight breaks out, don’t keep opening chests and trying on boots, shoot lightning or launch a fireball or two before ducking back into the depths of the castle.

3 Don’t Be Afraid

Hiding in battle royales is a sound strategy, and helps many players make it to the final circle. Unfortunately, in Spellbreak getting to the final circle without good gear or skill will mean a quick and ruthless defeat. New players should drop into crowded places, like Fort Halcyon or ruins near Mana Vaults; ready for a fight. This is truly the best way to learn how to play.

It will likely mean many exiles and a flurry of short rounds, but eventually, new players will learn how their gauntlet and enemy gauntlets work. Further, fights at the beginning of the match are the easiest the fights will be when no one has powerful gear in belts, gauntlets, or runes. This gives new players the most simple scenarios for learning how to fight.

2 Know When (And How) To Run

At the same time, players need to know how to keep track of their health and understand when a fight isn’t going to go their way. Running over the top of a mountain and throwing a couple of puddles of toxic goo can make for an easy escape when a nasty stoneshaper is giving chase. Picking up health potions and armor shards will allow players to stay alive after winning or escaping dangerous combat. Use runes to fly or stealth away, duck and hide in castle ruins, crouch in the occasional bush. Each of these options will help new players to stay alive in a bad situation.

1 Don’t Get Discouraged

Finally, players shouldn’t get discouraged when a player with the “pre-alpha tester” title snipes them from across the map with an ice lance. Some players have been playing this game for several months, and they will be better than all of the new players. But if anything, this is a reason for the newbies to keep playing. Alpha testers with great skills, strategies, and skins are a testament to how good Spellbreak is going to be, and how much potential each new player has. There will always be a better player hidden in another castle, and death is just the beginning to the next great match a new player is about to have. Don’t get discouraged. One day, that alpha tester with a sweet skin might just be you.
