Spellbreak, the free-to-play magical Battle Royale, released early this month. Developed by indie studio Proletariat, the game puts a magical spin on the Battle Royale genre. Players drop into Spellbreak's arena with arcane gauntlets at their command, which they can use to generate different elemental spells.

Combining magical elements leads to new and powerful effects, and players will be able to acquire new gauntlets in the arena. Like most free-to-play games, Spellbreak will generate revenue through micro-transactions. Gold is the game's premium currency and can be spent on cosmetic upgrades in the store. Although the quickest way to get Gold is through spending real money, it's also possible to earn it through gameplay.

Mastering Magic

The simplest way to earn Gold in Spellbreak is by leveling up. There are fifty Mage Levels to progress through, and each time a player reaches the next level they earn 50 Gold. As a result, knowing how to get the most XP is the key to farming Gold. Players earn XP through their performance, so mastering the game is important.

At the end of each round, players will be allocated an amount of XP based on how many Breakers they exiled and how well they placed. Obviously not everyone can take the crown, but placing in the top 20 still earns good XP. Exiling players means landing the last hit to knock them out of the game, this can be a little tricky with how chaotic some of Spellbreak's fights can get.

Elemental Focus

Before each round in Spellbreak, players get to choose their class. This dictates which school of magic they'll begin a round with. It's possible to pick up a second school during the round, which is where the interesting combinations come in. However, what's important to us is that the school that the player picks as their primary is the one that gets XP at the end of the round.

These schools of magic progress separately to the Mage Level, but use the same XP. They also give Gold when a new milestone is reached. This means that players who want to earn Gold as quickly as possible should make sure to avoid focusing too heavily on one school. Spreading the XP around will quickly fill up the lower ranks, earning more Gold. However, there's still a finite amount of Gold than can be earned through leveling. As a result, players who don't intend to spend real money should be sure of what they're buying.

Spellbreak is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
