Sony's kept all PlayStation 5 news very secret so far. Both the PS5 console itself and the console's launch line-up remain mysteries. But that may soon be changing. A new report claims that a PlayStation event is happening very soon, with tentative plans to hold it on June 3.

The report comes from Jason Schreier and Takashi Mochizuki at Bloomberg, who cite "people with direct knowledge of the matter." According to the report, Sony is planning a virtual event for June 3 which will focus on showcasing games for the PS5. Given that very few PS5 games have been announced as of yet, the showcase will likely feature mostly, if not all, brand new games for the upcoming next-gen console.

One thing the report makes clear, however, is that the June PS5 virtual event is only tentatively set for June 3. Sony's plans are not set in stone, even though the event is just a week away. As such, Sony could move the event to another date depending on how things progress in the coming days.

The new event would, judging by its date, supplant Sony's previous plans for an E3 or pre-E3 PS5 showcase. Sony had already announced that it wouldn't attend E3 in 2020 well before the COVID-19 pandemic, but that it would hold its own alternative event was all but guaranteed. This new digital alternative will fill that new role just as well.

Bloomberg isn't the only outlet that's hinted at a PS5 event on June 3. VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb has been keeping a list of summer gaming events for several weeks now. The list initially had a "Slate of PlayStation" event scheduled for June 4, well before Bloomberg's report or any other rumors. Since then, Grubb has removed the June 3 listing and replaced it with a PlayStation event set for "soon." This "soon" listing is notably placed between two other events on the schedule, one on June 2 and the other on June 4.

A big question mark looms regarding whether or not Sony will use this event to unveil the PS5 console for the first time. Microsoft unveiled the Xbox Series X in late 2019 and regardless of the divided opinions regarding the boxy console's look, it's rather well-known now. Sony's decision to reserve its unveiling of the PS5 is curious, but it must be confident to be doing so. With six months until the new consoles likely launch, Sony's got plenty of time. Plus, the games really are what matter most and it's not surprising to see Sony prioritize them.
