Highlights

  • Sony may be reviving Best of PSN collections, renewing trademark after years of inactivity.
  • The original Best of PSN Volume 1 on PS3 featured popular indie games like Fat Princess and Tokyo Jungle, but a Volume 2 never materialized.
  • While a new compilation may not be guaranteed, Sony's focus on PlayStation Plus and patent for Holographic Display suggest interesting developments ahead.

According to a new trademark filing, Sony could be looking to bring back The Best of PSN collections. The Best of PSN Volume 1 was published by Sony for the PS3 in 2013 and saw four of the most popular indie games on the PlayStation platform bundled together on a single Blu-Ray disc.

The Best of PSN Volume 1 disc contained a collection of four popular digital-only games; When Vikings Attack, Fat Princess, Sound Shapes, and the Sony-funded Tokyo Jungle. While the collection showcased the best indie games at the time, a follow-up never materialized. After 11 years, things could be about to change thanks to a recent move by Sony.

PS Plus Extra Losing 11 Games in April 2024

Following an unusual delay, Sony finally reveals which games will be leaving PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium in April 2024.

In a recent trademark filing, Sony has applied to renew the Best of PlayStation Network name after years of being inactive. Since the PlayStation 3 never saw Volume 2 come to fruition, players may feel it is unusual to see such activity with the name. It is, however, common practice for companies to renew trademarks to protect their products. In 2022, Microsoft renewed the trademarks for Blast Corps, which eventually saw a release on the Nintendo Switch Online N64 Expansion Pass.

Games Included in The Best of PSN Volume 1

  • When Vikings Attack
  • Sound Shapes
  • Tokyo Jungle
  • Fat Princess

It has to be stated that the trademark filing for the Best of PlayStation Network may not result in any physical compilation, as Sony could just be renewing the brand name to stop other companies from using the name. The Japanese company is often seen re-registering older IPs, along with new ideas. Most recently, Sony has filed a patent for a Holographic Display that could be implemented into the PlayStation ecosystem.

Gamers may have to wait to learn if Sony is bringing back the Best of PlayStation Network compilation series. For now, the Japanese company is focusing on providing games through the PlayStation Plus service which sees new games added monthly. For March 2024, the Extra tier added games including Blood Bowl 3, LEGO DC Supervillains, and Marvel’s Midnight Suns. The Premium tier further added retro titles including Cool Boarders, Gods Eater Burst, and Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier.

Time will tell if Sony decides to bring back the Best of PlayStation Network collections. Thanks to the PS5 having access to the majority of PS4 titles, the PlayStation Store has over 10 years of games available to players. With the library of games on the PlayStation ever-growing, it could be a sign that Sony is looking to highlight some of the smaller games that are available on its platform by revitalizing the Best of PlayStation Network series.
