For the past week Spider-Man fans have been salivating over the thought that Sony Pictures could go all out in Spider-Man 3 by bringing in former web-swingers Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire for small cameos in the superhero’s next film starring Tom Holland. However, the studio does not look ready to confirm or deny any rumors based on a recent statement.

On top of that, the Spider-Man rumor mill has also churned out all but official comebacks from Jamie Foxx reprising his role as Electro, as well as Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange taking over the late Tony Stark’s mentorship of the young MCU Spider-Man, two bits of news that already have fans creating their own mockup posters.

For that purpose, Entertainment Tonight Canada posed the question on the subject directly to Sony Pictures, who limited themselves to responding that “those rumored castings are not confirmed”, thus only strengthening the prospect of these all-star reunions being important to the plot in Spider-Man 3.

Maguire was the poster boy for Spider-Man from 2002 to 2007, helping pave the way for the superhero film genre long before Marvel’s MCU made it a Hollywood staple. For his part, Garfield took over the role until the lukewarm reception of his Amazing Spider-Man’s second outing, as well as other complications killed any direct sequels to that series.

The bright side to Disney’s corporate consolidation over all things Marvel is that almost any external affairs can be thrown aside for artistic considerations, and having Spider-Man 3 be the showcase scenario for that feat is a dream come true for fans. Add that to the never-ending source material that the Spider-Man comics provide in terms of multidimensional crossovers and the success of 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse, and it almost begs the question, why wouldn’t Sony do everything in their power to make sure all the circulating rumors actually materialize?

So far, Cumberbatch and Foxx’s appearances are a given, with Dr. Strange and Electro teasing to be an integral part of the film’s still unknown plot, but when it comes to the other Spideys, even small cameos from Maguire and Garfield in an after credits scene would do well to show just how far Spider-Man has come in the last two decades. Maybe even throw Spider-Cat in there, just for kicks.

Spider-Man 3 is scheduled to begin shooting soon, with a target release for December 17, 2021 .
