The PlayStation brand has been around for some time, with a tenure that dates back to the mid-1990s. A great deal of this success can be attributed to its stellar line of first-party exclusives, many of which began on the original PlayStation. MediEvil was one of these franchises, first hitting the scene in 1998 and spawning a sequel, MediEvil 2, in 2000. The first game received a ground-up remake for PS4 in 2019, providing a visual facelift while retaining the same goofy charm of the original.
However, MediEvil's sequel is just as beloved by fans. While the first game had a remake, MediEvil 2 has yet to see the same treatment. The first remake sold and reviewed decently enough, making a remake for the second game seem plausible. Whatever Sony's plans are for the IP going forward, given how much time has passed since the original remake as well as the mystery surrounding much of PS5's lineup, now seems perfect for a MediEvil 2 remake to be announced.
MediEvil 2 is a Beloved Cult Classic
Fans of action-adventure games today may immediately jump to God of War (2018) or Uncharted on a PlayStation console. Back in the late 90s, MediEvil was a compelling offering in this regard. The varied level design, charming plot, and whimsical music made for an all-around enjoyable adventure. MediEvil 2, in true sequel fashion, doubled down on what worked with more interesting puzzles, crazier enemy design, and a well-paced journey.
All that being said, clunky combat and platforming may have kept MediEvil from exploding in popularity like its fellow PlayStation exclusives. The remake of the original game kept this intact, for better or worse, to authentically deliver the classic experience with new graphics. A remake can bring cult classics back to the modern era, and if new players are able to look past some of its outdated elements, there is a loveable quest to be found in MediEvil 2 - something fans would fully support if a remake was announced.
MediEvil 2 Would Add Variety To The PS5's Library
The oddball style and tone of MediEvil (and by extension, its sequel) feel like a breath of fresh air when compared to the current gaming landscape. Battle royales, military shooters, and endless open-world RPGs are the go-to genres these days. Many major video games can be a intimidating in scale and intensity, so something like MediEvil 2 could be a great change of pace for players seeking something more simple and old-fashioned.
Many of the heavy hitters for PS5 look stunning, with titles like Horizon: Forbidden West and God of War: Ragnarok sure to be some of the most epic adventures on the platform. Future titles that have been teased like Marvels Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy 16 should also be exceptional, massive experiences. But all of these titles are video games on the largest scale, something which may become a little bit claustrophobic for players wanting some variety.
This is not to suggest these games will be bad, they should be top-notch titles based on the pedigree of each development studio. It's just key to include different experiences to ensure a console's lineup has something for every taste. MediEvil 2 being remade for PS5 would not only appeal to the long-time fans clamoring for it, but also for players seeking a smaller-scale adventure between the larger heavy hitters. Furthermore, it's a kid-friendly IP, something that wouldn't hurt MediEvil 2's sales for parents seeking an appropriate game to play this holiday season.
