Sons of the Forest has been in development for some time, with fans not knowing when the game would finally come out. After many years of anticipation, the sequel to The Forest gets its third trailer, giving players a tease of what monstrosities await them, and when their adventure will finally begin.

Endnight first premiered Sons of the Forest at The Game Awards 2019, and information has been fairly infrequent ever since. Besides a handful of trailers, fans of the original 2014 indie hit, The Forest, were left to speculate when the game would finally release, it at some point supposed to have released this year.

The new intense Sons of the Forest trailer gives fans a release date as well as the most in-depth look at the game's nightmares to date. Endnight moved Sons of the Forest's launch from 2021 to May 20, 2022, giving the game another six months of polish and tuning before going live. As for the creatures of the forest, well the multi-armed female mutant, the ravenous cannibals, and the creature with the chest mandibles all appear once more, but its the new body horror that steals the trailer. There are many conjoined creatures that appear throughout, with the most unsettling one being two that are joined at the hips, with the bottom one holding up the top, as if it was ripped from The Thing.

Beyond the terrifying monsters though, the trailer goes to great lengths in showing the variety of survival tools at their disposal in Sons of the Forest. Like The Forest, the signature crafting tarp makes its reappearance in this trailer, it being the place where the player's inventory is laid out and can assemble new tools and items. Settlements appear to be enhanced as well, with the player arranging wood stakes for a fence and then chopping their tips into spikes, preventing cannibals from climbing over. The trailer ends with characters fighting a behemoth creature in what appears to be a modern facility, teasing some of the twists that are bound to happen.

Hopefully this release date is the final one for Sons of the Forest, by the time it drops, fans having waited 8 years. The Forest and its eventual VR support helped skyrocket that game's popularity, and it looks like this Sons of the Forest is doing more of the same. It is a shame, however, that the game is only coming to PC (at least right now) despite The Forest releasing on the PS4. And with no indication of the sequel receiving VR functionality, Sons of the Forest may follow its predecessor's footsteps in more ways than one.

Sons of the Forest releases May 20, 2022 on PC.
