The Katana is a stylish melee weapon in Sons of the Forest that players can find late-game. The storyline is uncovered as players naturally explore a cannibal-invested remote island. Like its predecessor, The Forest, players find themselves stranded after crash-landing. One way to ensure survival is to get all the weapons hidden around the island, and the Katana is an effective tool against cannibals and mutants for those who like to fight hand-to-hand.
A crucial part of the story's progression is finding equipment and key items while unlocking more playable areas. Because there are so many items needed to get to the Katana, its location is near the end of the game, but players can find it within their first days if they use their time wisely. So, here's how to get the Katana in Sons of the Forest.
Preparing to Get the Katana
There are several items players will have to get first before they can find the Katana, including the following:
- Rebreather
- Rope Gun
- Shovel
- Maintenance Keycard
- Guest Keycard
All these items are found in the island's caves or underground bunkers marked on the above map, but players will need to start with the Rebreather or the Rope Gun; both are necessary to make it through the cave the Shovel is found. The caves are some of the most dangerous areas in the forest because of the low visibility, lack of resources, and hordes of mutants inside them.
Stocking up on food and supplies will make the journeys into them less hazardous. Taking a detour after the Flashlight before entering one is another good idea, but the Emergency Pack lighter provides some level of light.
After getting the Shovel, players can get the Maintenance Keycard from Digsite A. The Digsite will be north of the purple marker closest to the mountain. A couple of broken-down golf carts and equipment are near a mound of loose dirt where the dig site's door is buried. Players must dig all the dirt away and open the hatch door to climb inside the bunker, but stay alert for cannibals that may attack. The keycard is in one of the rooms inside the bunker on a desk next to a 3D-Printer.
From there, head southwest to the Recreational bunker hidden inside an unmarked cave on the map. The cave is near a pulsating green marker on the GPS closest to the western beach. Unfortunately, the Recreational bunker is overrun with mutants, so be prepared for a fight. The Guest keycard is inside a clubroom past the Recreational Center's second-floor pool bar.
Once they get all the required items, players can head to the island's east side to find the Katana.
Katana Location in Sons of the Forest
The Katana is on the far east side of the island. The fastest way to get there is by Hang Glider, but players can travel on foot around the mountain. The Katana's cave is next to a large lake near another one of those green signals. There is a giant rock where the entrance is nestled inside. The immediate cave is short, and eventually, players will come across a hole in the floor.
Go inside the hole to find an underground facility. There are two sets of stairs leading up and down, but the upper floor is blocked. Follow the stairs to the next set and go deeper into the facility until there is a security door. Use the Guest Keycard to open the door, revealing a deceased soldier in another room with supply crates and a gold door.
Level 1 of the facility is past the gold door, and several mutants are waiting to attack. Therefore, taking the time to ensure weapons are loaded, health is up, and stamina is full would be wise before continuing any further.
Level 1 consists of three separate corridors back to back, with rooms in each with supplies, including the Putter and the Flashlight Attachment. Past the third corridor are more staircases that take players to Level 2.
Level 2 is set up similarly to Level 1, with multiple corridors containing rooms and supplies. Go past the first area closest to the stairwell and into the second. Enter the first door on the right, and a short hallway will lead to a dimly lit room. The Katana is sitting on a display rack across from the kitchenette.
To leave the facilities, head down to Level 5 and find the double security doors. Again, use the Guest Keycard to open the doors and enter the exit cave. Players can equip the Katana from their inventory or assign it to one of the weapon hotkeys for easy use.
