Players are thrust into the world of Sons of the Forest after an opening cutscene and aren't given much information on how to survive past a small visual handbook that can be found in an emergency pack they have access to from the start. This handbook has pictures and explanations for how to build simple structures and tools but actually making these items is much more freehand than it was in the original release. Players won't set down a fire outline and then build it this time around, they'll simply need to make it themselves from sticks and then reinforce it if they so wish.

Although it seems pretty straightforward, making a fire can actually seem really difficult at the start for most new players. Here's a look at how players can build a fire in Sons of the Forest and the steps they can take to ensure it's protected and easily marked.

How To Make A Fire In Sons Of The Forest

SonsOfTheForestPlacingDownSticks

Thankfully, it's pretty easy to make a fire in Sons of the Forest. All players will need are a couple of sticks and a few leaves. Sticks can be easily spotted on the ground and picked up or players can chop down small trees to gain access to a few of them. Leaves can be grabbed by simply slashing at bushes with either the Tactical Axe or the Knife at the start. Once players have both of these items in their inventory, they can quickly make a fire practically anywhere.

To make a fire, players first need to grab a stick from their Inventory. Sticks are located in the bottom right of the main Inventory screen. Once they have a stick in hand, players need to look at the ground until they see an icon pop up. If they see an icon that looks like two smaller sticks, they're good, and they simply need to left-click to have their character automatically break the stick in half and place the pieces on the ground. Doing this again on top of the first sticks will automatically see the character adding leaves and creating a small fire. If players see a circle icon, that means they need to Right-Click to change to the appropriate icon. Right-Clicking when holding a stick and looking at the ground allows players to seamlessly swap between breaking sticks to create a fire or staking them in the ground to make torches and other items.

Once players have created a fire, they will need to light it up. They can do so by looking at the newly created fire and holding the appropriate button.

How To Reinforce A Fire Pit In Sons Of The Forest

Once players have placed down a fire, they can actually reinforce it a bit. The first step in making a more suitable, permanent fire pit is to surround the fire with large rocks. These rocks can be picked up on the ground (and are much larger than the small rocks that can be thrown). Players can access these rocks in the bottom right of the main inventory screen. Once holding a rock, players can look at the fire, and they will notice a circle icon on the outside of the fire itself. By left-clicking, they will place a rock, and they can continue to place large rocks until the entire fire is encircled. Doing so will help make the fire more permanent and protect it better from damage.

Players can also fortify their fire to be stronger by adding more traditional wood to it instead of small sticks. To do so, players will need to chop down a larger tree to gain access to a log. Once they have a log, they can stand over it (or stake it in the ground) and look at it with their Tactical Axe in hand until they notice a circle going around the log. The key is to cut off the smallest log possible (one log can be cut into four small logs). After the smallest logs are cut, they will need to be cut one more time (split in half lengthwise). Once players have small log halves in hand, they can interact with their fire with left-click and they will place firewood onto it, making it as strong as possible.
