Highlights

  • Sonic X Shadow Generations is a remastered version of Sonic Generations with new Shadow-centric levels.
  • The new levels focus on Shadow's most infamous moments, including battles with Biolizard, Black Doom, and more.
  • The new story content will be focused on Shadow's tragic past, with Takashi Iizuka noting that the Time Eater is responsible for the white space Shadow finds himself in.

Sonic X Shadow Generations head Takashi Iizuka recently shared more information about the upcoming remaster’s story and how the new Shadow-centric content will tie into the original game. Back in January, Sega announced an updated version of Sonic Generations, a 2011 anniversary title that remixed levels from across the franchise in honor of the titular hedgehog’s 20th birthday. Sonic X Shadow Generations won’t just be the old game with a new coat of paint though, as there will also be additional levels centered around Sonic’s famous arch-rival Shadow the Hedgehog.

This new bonus campaign, appropriately titled “Shadow Generations,” will seemingly take the self-proclaimed Ultimate Lifeform on a journey across some of his most infamous moments in the Sonic franchise. From what has been shown so far in previous Sonic X Shadow Generations previews, players will get to re-experience Shadow’s battle against the Biolizard from the end of Sonic Adventure 2, run through the ruined Space Colony Ark that stands at the core of his troubled backstory, and even come face-to-face with the sinister Black Doom from the 2005 Shadow the Hedgehog spin-off.

Sonic X Shadow Generations Has An Unexpected Legacy Skin

Sega confirms another legacy skin for the upcoming Sonic X Shadow Generations, and it's an appropriate impressive deep-cut reference.

In a recent interview with Famitsu (via Sonic Stadium), Sonic X Shadow Generations producers Takashi Iizuka and Shun Nakamura shed some insight into how the new Shadow Generations levels will be connected to Sonic’s own trip down memory lane in the original game. According to Iizuka, the Time Eater (the monster that served as the primary villain and final boss of Sonic Generations) will create the White Space that Shadow finds himself trapped within. As shown in past Sonic X Shadow Generations gameplay trailers, this White Space resembles the open-world hub introduced in 2022’s Sonic Frontiers.

Shadow Will Confront His Tragic Past in Sonic X Shadow Generations

Takashi Iizuka also reiterated that Sonic X Shadow Generations’ new content will be more story-focused than the original game, with Shadow confronting the demons of his past while trying to escape the White Space. Iizuka notes that Shadow has a more tragic backstory than other Sonic characters, and his goal with “Shadow Generations” is to convey Shadow’s allure by including said backstory along with characters like Black Doom - who is shown to be taunting Shadow as he navigates through his dark memories in Sonic X Shadow Generations.

Black Doom won't be the only enemy Shadow encounters in the new story content, as the game's official Japanese gaming website recently hinted at another playable character in Sonic X Shadow Generations. Some of the potential candidates include Metal Sonic and Eclipse the Darkling from the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comics. Shadow will also gain some powerful new abilities when Sonic X Shadow Generations launches this October as part of 2024’s Year of Shadow event.
