Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a bigger movie than the original in many ways. The first movie had a road trip motif spliced together with a traditional coming-of-age tale. Sonic is struggling with making friends, while Tom doesn’t want to be a sheriff in a tiny town anymore.

There are some action set pieces in the original movie, but not many. That’s one way that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 blows its predecessor out of the water. However, it also leaves a lot of unanswered questions on the table for the series. Readers will need to wade through a few major spoilers in order to find out what they are though.

8 Who Were Those Humans With Knuckles?

Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 starts with Dr. Robotnik trying to get off of the mushroom planet. He eventually succeeds by blasting out a signal which prompts a ring portal to open up. Three humanoid-looking individuals step through the portal.

They are wearing full armor, so it’s hard to tell what these beings are supposed to be. After that, Knuckles steps through, but he doesn’t seem connected to the humans. These mysterious warriors are strangely never brought up again. Who were they?

7 Who Killed Longclaw And The Echidna?

Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The beginning of the first movie has Longclaw throw Sonic into a ring portal as an army of echidna storm their loft. Longclaw looks like she is the only owl left in her tribe. It’s hard to imagine she could take out the entire echidna army by herself.

However, Knuckles tells Sonic that no one made it back from the attack that day thus leaving Knuckles to fend for himself. Did Longclaw and the echidna army have a stalemate that ended in death or did something else happen?

6 Will Shadow Get Guns?

Shaodw the Hedgehog

The first movie ended with the big reveal of Tails in the stinger. Shadow is the big secret of the credits in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. From what the GUN agency says in the movie, it seems like Dr. Robotnik had nothing to do with Shadow’s creation.

If he did, he would surely have remembered having a sleeper hedgehog in hiding. The other big question surrounding Shadow is whether or not he will get guns. If the next movie is aimed at kids, then the answer is probably not.

5 GUN’s Plan

At the end of the first movie, it is clear that the army knows Tom is hiding Sonic, i.e. an alien creature. However, Walters, the commander in charge, decides to ignore it. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has one of the oddest reveals for a video game movie in recent memory.

Randall, Rachel’s fiancé, was only going to marry her to get close to Tom. The idea was that Randall could potentially see and capture Sonic if he got close enough. If Walters and the entire GUN agency knew Tom was lying though, then why didn’t they just covertly storm Tom’s house instead? Creating a sting via a wedding could not have been cheap.

4 Why Did The Map Light Up When It Did?

Sonic and Tails exploring a temple in Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Longclaw doesn’t throw Sonic immediately to Earth. As it is revealed in the first movie, Sonic runs around to other planets in search of a home. Earth was his last shot and he bravely ventured ahead, alone. Presumably, he touched the map a lot when he was moving around.

Why then did the map light up in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 but did nothing in the first movie? It’s not like Tails told Sonic a secret password or helped him solve a difficult puzzle. It lit up for the convenience of the plot and that seems to be about it.

3 Why Didn’t Longclaw Move Sonic To Earth Along With Herself Ages Ago?

The map is one question that may bother fans. There is also the related subject matter of Earth being the resting place of the Master Emerald. If Longclaw and her people built the temple long ago to house this precious gem, then why was it left unguarded?

There might have been guards there originally who then disappeared. Either way, it seems like it would have been smarter for Longclaw to live secretly on Earth instead of near a village of angry echidna.

2 Knuckles Can Read And Speak In English?

Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2

One of the biggest questions left unanswered in the first movie is how Sonic knew English. Since Longclaw went to Earth in the past, it seems reasonable to assume she taught Sonic English to prepare him for a journey to Earth one day. That makes sense for those two and even Tails since he has been watching Sonic for a while.

However, how did Knuckles learn to speak English and read the language? One of the most hilarious scenes in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has Knuckles reading texts between Sonic and Tom out loud. It’s funny, but it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

1 The Master Emerald’s Power

Dr. Robotnik discovering the Master Emerald in Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The Master Emerald’s power is inconsistent in the movie. Tails explains that the magic in the gem will allow the user to will anything into existence. This prompts Wade to humorously bring up the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man incident in the Ghostbusters films.

If Dr. Robotnik, for example, could will his giant robot into existence, then why did he strip apart the table and train? Was he thinking too small? Later on, Sonic summons up a storm to produce a chili dog. That summoning technique falls in line with what Tails said earlier.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is in theaters now.
