With Sonic the Hedgehog 2 soon to be released by Paramount Pictures, new promotional materials for the film continue to be released to fans worldwide. The most recent poster to be revealed not only showcases some of the latest title’s main characters, but is also heavily inspired by one of the most popular Sega video games of all time.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which features Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, saw the main character stranded on Earth from a young age and teaming up with local Green Hills sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marden) to defeat the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). The original movie has become the all-time highest-grossing film adaption of a video game in North America and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has since been highly anticipated - particularly after a new Sonic 2 TV spot came to our screens last month.

The latest movie poster shown by Paramount Pictures features the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 character and cast members Sonic, Tails and Dr. Robotnik in a scene reminiscent of the North American and European box art for the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 video game on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. The video game was famously released on November 24, 1992, AKA “Sonic 2sday” and was the first title to be launched worldwide on the same day, with the game’s cover featuring Sonic and Tails at the front and an oversized Dr. Robotnik grasping at a large, red number two towards the back of the shot.

Since Idris Elba was cast as Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, many fans have been looking forward to seeing the addition of further characters from the franchise and those examining the poster closely will have also spotted Knuckle’s reflection in the number two. The poster’s background also hints at the plot for the upcoming film and the final Sonic 2 trailer reveals a new twist on Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik, with movie goers eager to see how Eggman makes his return to Green Hills.

Originally slated for release in November 2019, the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was delayed to 2020 after feedback about Sonic’s character design was less than favorable. This time round, fans appear to have generally reacted positively to the shots of characters, including Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), who has a larger role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 than in the first film. It has even been suggested Knuckles the Echidna might one day have a film of his own and therefore perhaps Sonic the Hedgehog 2 could launch another franchise.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is due to speed into theaters on April 8, 2022.
