Sonic the Hedgehog 2 star Jim Carrey made waves when he suggested he may retire from acting soon. Now, Sonic 2 producers Neal Moritz and Toby Ascher have spoken about Dr. Robotnik's future if Carrey retires.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 picks up right after the original movie and will bring back the original cast while introducing the highly-anticipated Knuckles, who is played by Idris Elba. Carrey returns as the nefarious Doctor Robotnik, and it seems many have been enjoying the actor as the very popular villain (creators and fans alike). Robotnik's quirky personality comes across as strong on the big screen, and many are gravitating towards the performance displayed.

With the recent news that Carrey may actually be retiring, many are wondering what the future holds for Robotnik in the event of the actor's departure. Regardless of what happens, the producers are saying they don't want to see the actor go and in the event that Carrey does step away, they would never replace his role as the popular Doctor Robotnik. Speaking to IGN about this situation, Ascher said, "Jim Carrey is always a member of the Sonic family and he will always have a place in these movies and TV shows as long as he'd like to be around. We love Jim and he's so special, and what he does with Robotnik is so incredible, we would love him as long as he would like to be there with us."

Echoing the sentiments, Moritz went on to say that he feels Carrey might not step away from the role of Robotnik at all. "I have a feeling that he loves Robotnik so much that I don't think he'll be able to walk away from that," Moritz said. IGN then spoke about how hard it would be to replace Carrey in the role, and Moritz said, "No, we wouldn't even try."

Regardless of what happens moving forward, Sonic fans should rest assured knowing that the role of Robotnik is solidified within the universe of Sonic movies. This character is attached to the DNA of the franchise moving forward and is forever a part of the world. The creators may consider other characters as lead antagonists following the absence of Carrey, but regardless of what happens, they'll make sure that Robotnik stays present behind the scenes.

Sonic the Hedgehog is the latest video game adaptation to make the case that the genre is on the rise. The Witcher, Detective Pikachu and even Castlevania have all proven that it's possible to make an adaptation that doesn't flat and give video games a bad name. Hopefully moving forward, this trend continues and fans see more of these adaptations go right.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently out in theaters.
