The fanmade audio play, Sonic and Tails R, currently has a second season in development. One of the most notable things about this audio play is that it has Ryan Drummond, the original voice actor for the blue blur during the Sonic Adventure era, reprising his role after 15 years of not voicing the character. Despite his absence from the role, when the series first premiered in 2020, fans were floored, praising Drummond for how natural he sounded, and how it felt like he never stopped voicing Sonic in the first place. It then quickly gained notoriety among the Sonic fandom, to the point where the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube account put it in its playlist that is dedicated to amazing fan projects.

For the uninitiated, Sonic and Tails R is an audio play created by Emi Jones and Doryan Nelson. It's about Sonic and Tails embarking on an adventure to stop Dr. Eggman. Despite being a fan project, it features a number of official Sonic the Hedgehog voice actors, from the aforementioned Ryan Drummond as Sonic, Jason Griffith reprising his role as Shadow, to even Eggman's current voice actor, Mike Pollock, being in the cast as well. The only exception is Tails, as he is voiced by Emi Jones herself. Jones then revealed that a second season is in the works for this massive fan project.

This was revealed during a livestream on Jones' channel, where she was hosting a panel about Sonic and Tails R, answering questions with her co-hosts Doryan Nelson, Ryan Drummond, and Trey Nobles. This reveal was accompanied by a short teaser trailer, which briefly played a bunch of clips from past episodes and games in the Sonic series, including one from Sonic Adventure 2. This is followed by a dramatic segment where Sonic fights against an unknown force, along with Tails warning him about his opponent.

The video continues after Sonic's opponent has apparently retreated, disappearing as well. With no immediate danger, Sonic and Tails leave, with Tails having obtained the Chaos Emeralds, which was their main objective. As the video ends, a female voice is heard, played by Lizzie Freeman, wondering if the duo can "stop her creation" before revealing the logo for the second season.

This Sonic fan project ran for 10 episodes on Emi Jones' YouTube channel, EmuEmi, with fans thinking this would only be one-and-done. Many were caught off-guard when it was revealed the audio show would be getting a second season. With the first season chock-full of franchise continuity and reprisals of past actors, fans are anticipating more of it to be present in this season.

Sonic and Tails R Season 2 is currently in development.
