Sega is giving fans another look at the upcoming Sonic Superstars during Gamescom’s opening night next week. The past few years have been quite exciting for fans of Sonic the Hedgehog, as the Blue Blur has made shockwaves across several different forms of media. The live-action Sonic The Hedgehog movies have defied a controversial initial design and the stigma surrounding video game film adaptations, while Netflix’s Sonic Prime animated series has brought hyperactive hedgehog back to the small screen. On the gaming front, last year saw Sonic make a 3D comeback in Sonic Frontiers, which took the long-running series in a bold new direction.

While Sonic Frontiers experimented with an ambitious open-world format, another Sonic game is taking the Blue Blur back to his side-scrolling platformer roots. During June’s Summer Game Fest livestream, Sega announced Sonic Superstars, a new 2D title that will see Sonic and his colorful band of friends race across vibrant locations in fast-paced co-op gameplay. Details about Sonic Superstars have been dripping out in the run toward its still-unrevealed Fall 2023 release date, and now eager fans are getting a better look at the upcoming platformer next week.

Sonic Superstars will be featured on the opening night of Gamescom on Tuesday, August 22. This news was revealed by Gamescom host and Summer Game Fest architect Geoff Keighley, who shared a brief video clip promoting Sonic Superstars' presence at the show on Twitter earlier this week. While vague on the details, Keighley promised a special "world premiere" with "superstar news" for the upcoming co-op side-scroller.

As noted above, a few details about Sonic Superstars have already been made public since the game's unveiling a few months ago. In addition to Sonic himself, series mainstays Tails, Knuckles, and Amy will all be playable in Sonic Superstars, and each will have their own special abilities to help them navigate the many colorful obstacle courses in their path. The nefarious Dr. Eggman will return as well, alongside the often-forgotten Fang the Hunter and a brand-new villain named Trip. The mystical Chaos Emeralds are back too, and they will grant Sonic and his friends special powers.

One thing fans still don’t know is Sonic Superstars’ release date, which could very well be revealed during the game’s showing at the upcoming Gamescom opening night event. There will be plenty of other games being shown on Tuesday, such as Mortal Kombat 1, and now it’s been confirmed that Sonic fans will get to see more of the famous hedgehog’s next platforming adventure in just a few short days.

Sonic Superstars launches in Fall 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
