Sega has revealed the full list of powers that players can use in the upcoming Sonic Superstars co-op multiplayer platformer. This new entry in the franchise will be revisiting its classic 2D platforming roots on the Genesis, in the same vein as 2017's Sonic Mania. Unlike Sonic Mania however, Sonic Superstars has a stronger emphasis on cooperative play, allowing for four players on screen at once, along with making the series' classic gemstones, the Chaos Emeralds, an active gameplay element as opposed to a collectible or plot device.

Historically speaking, the Sonic franchise's Chaos Emeralds are usually used as a key to unlocking the powerful Super Sonic via the Special Stage challenges or are collected throughout the story and contribute to saving the day. This game however will bestow players benefits whenever they collect just one Chaos Emerald, making it more in the style of Sonic Colors' Wisps. Sega has revealed exactly what power each of these seven Emeralds will grant.

In an interview between Game Informer and Sonic Team leader Takashi Iizuka, he states that each Emerald can be collected in a Special Stage like the past games, where players swing from floating bubbles towards a goal. He states that each Chaos Emerald offers something unique, available for every playable character in the game. Not only that, but each power can be selected, with each one under a cooldown timer in order to use. These seven powers are known as Avatar, Bullet, Water, Ivy, Vision, Slow, and Extra.

What is the Full List of Chaos Emerald Powers?

  • Blue Emerald - Avatar (Produces clones to attack all at once)
  • Red Emerald - Bullet (Shoots the player in a direction midair)
  • Cyan Emerald - Water (Allows players to travel more easily in water)
  • Green Emerald - Ivy (Grows vines that can reach high areas)
  • Purple Emerald - Vision (Reveals hidden platforms and items)
  • Yellow Emerald - Slow (Slows down everything on screen for better reactions)
  • White Emerald - Extra (Allows an Extra move depending on the character)

Each of these powers can help make a player's experience easier or play to Sonic Superstars' co-op premise. The Extra action in particular is very special, as it changes based on the character used. Sonic gets his classic homing attack, Amy can throw her hammer, Knuckles can punch enemies, and Tails can generate a tornado with his two tails that will take out enemies in his way. These extra power-ups are completely optional and aren't required to beat the game.

Much like the other games, collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds allows the player to turn into a Super version of their character. Iizuka confirms that all playable characters in the game will be able to turn super, including Amy Rose, which is appropriate since Sonic Origins Plus debuted Super Amy recently. While in these Super forms, they will become invincible and have their speed increased, though players will need to keep an eye on their ring count as it will deplete over time.

Sonic Superstars launches in Fall 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
