10 Most Emotional Songs from the Sonic the Hedgehog Games

Sonic the Hedgehog is known for his speed, but the games are also known for harboring some emotional songs that could make the players shed a tear.

The result is a batch of hyper-pop tracks that throw it back to the roots of the series, and while it's always hard to pick a favorite in a Sonic game, there are definitely a few tracks here that are especially fun and memorable. These are the songs that players can most look forward to hearing when jumping into the latest adventure for the Sonic gang.

7 Special Stage

Sonic In A Special Stage

Since Special Stages are always an optional part of the games, it means the music team can get a little more experimental with their compositions, something that most definitely translated to Sonic Superstars. The beginning of the song almost sounds like a deep-jungle rave track for how loud the bass is, but it does become a lot more lively and vibrant as the track goes on.

Parts of the song almost feel like it's been ripped straight out of Sonic CD, which could either be a blessing or disastrous, depending on who you ask. Overall, it's a fairly messy track that still does a good job at hyping up the antics of a Special Stage; it probably could have just been a tad shorter.

6 Lagoon City Zone Act 1

Sonic Running Across Water

Packed full of geysers, water traps, and storm clouds, Lagoon City Zone has a real aquatic atmosphere that's perfectly articulated through its music, which is an upbeat synth-based track that's a joy to listen to when crashing down a water slide. It has vaguely similar elements to the catchy track found in Hydrocity Zone, but almost like a delicate blend between both of its acts.

The 9 Best Sonic Stages Of All Time, Ranked

Sonic has raced through a plethora of different stages during his time, but these are some of the most memorable and exciting ones.

There's even a hint of Diamond Dust in the track from Sonic 3D Blast, which is a track that also perfectly encapsulates the fast-paced nature of that stage. The song does start to get a little repetitive after a while due to the lack of switch-ups, but considering Lagoon City isn't too long anyway, it's still a great tune that has a few callbacks to other classic stages from the series.

5 Sand Sanctuary Act 1

Sonic Running Atop A Giant Snake In A Desert

The Sand Sanctuary Act 1 track does a great job right from the get-go at making players feel like they're in for a real challenge since the stage is undoubtedly one of the hardest in the game, especially due to the lightning-fast rails and tricky quicksand. The music this time around actually takes quite a departure from the usual bubblegum-pop aesthetic that Sonic music is so well known for, instead taking a more atmospheric approach at first before becoming a lot faster later on.

The song has taken clear inspiration from traditional Egyptian music but mixed in with Tee Lopes' signature MIDI synths to create a wonderful blend of sounds that perfectly fits this incredibly detailed and fun stage. Just make sure not to get too distracted by the music; otherwise, it can be easy to fall off one of the many sand platforms scattered across the stage.

4 Egg Fortress Act 1

Sonic Standing In A Revolving Gear

Considering that it's the final area in the entire game, it would make sense that Egg Fortress would need to be accompanied by an epic track to finish off the journey, but Jun Senoue and Tee Lopes really went above and beyond to make this as epic as possible. Behind the glitchy synths, the Egg Fortress sounds extremely similar to Final Fortress in Sonic Heroes in how bombastic and grand it feels.

Once players reach the second half of Sonic Superstars, they'll quickly realize that there's quite a large difficulty spike that appears, and with this being the final challenge, it's easy to imagine just how challenging Eggman's very own fortress really is. It might be a little tricky, but the suspenseful track does a great job at making this feel like the heroes just need one last push to reach the end. An extra bridge or even a beat switch would have been much appreciated, but this is still, nonetheless, one of the most exciting late-game tracks in Sonic Superstars.

3 Pinball Carnival Zone Act 2

Sonic Running Through A Spooky Carnival

Unlike the first act of the Pinball Carnival Zone, which sounds glamorous and glitzy, the second act's track incorporates some creepier horror-inspired elements into the music that fits the haunted carnival aesthetic of the stage. The spooky techno beat itself is incredibly infectious, and undoubtedly one of the catchiest songs in the entire game, but every now and again, some strange noises can be heard in the background, like an evil laugh or a mysterious growl.

The 10 Best 2D Sonic The Hedgehog Games, Ranked

Despite their age and visual limitations, these great 2D Sonic games have stood the test of time.

The song is incredibly fun and outlandish, but it's one that fans will no doubt be humming to themselves after switching the game off, especially around the Halloween season. A fun fact is that this is one of the few tracks in the game that was actually arranged by Rintaro Soma, who has also worked on a lot of the Cyber Space levels in Sonic Frontier.

2 Bridge Island Act 1

Sonic Running Across Bridge Island

Not having Green Hill Zone as the first stage in a Sonic game seemed like it was going to be impossible for a while, especially due to how iconic the soundtrack for that level is, but Bridge Island provides a breath of fresh air that instantly hooks players into the experience. The song is fun, colorful, and almost explosive in how it progresses, and it's the perfect track to get players started with their experience.

In many ways, it's a mash-up of older Sonic tracks all perfectly melded together to create one of the most exciting tracks in the game and maybe even the series as a whole. While there are sprinkles of Sylvania Castle Zone thrown in there, there's also definitely some influence from Sonic Robo Blast, released back in the 1990s. Therefore, it's not only a fantastic homage to the series' past, but it's also a track that manages to stand on its own as a worthy successor to the iconic Green Hill Zone, but there's just one other track that slightly beats it out.

1 Speed Jungle Act 2

Sonic Racing Around A Jungle

After playing the first act of Speed Jungle, fans might notice that the composition and general structure of the music in Act 2 sounds wildly different, and it's actually because this track was taken over by Hidenori Shoji, the lead composer for the Yakuza games. Anyone who has played those games will know very well just how captivating a lot of the music is, usually incorporating elements of drum & bass, which are mixed around and filtered to make for some real earworms.

Hidenori has worked his magic yet again in the second act of Speed Jungle, which has an absolutely addictive drum loop and techno sequence that's more or less impossible not to bop the head to. While the high-speed drum and bass composition lingers on in the background, there are also a few sequences in between that are a little more low-tempo and even mysterious, which really lends itself to the vast jungle environment Sonic and his friends find themselves in. There's no doubt that this is one of the greatest modern Sonic tracks in quite a few years, and arguably one of the best in the series for how well it manages to replicate that classic upbeat Sonic sound while also feeling completely new and unique.
