Sonic Origins is a modern release of the classic 2D Sonic games that gave the iconic Blue Blur his start. Sonic Origins is one package that contains four Sonic games from the Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive era: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD.

For anyone that's been a fan of Sonic, or has at least played any of the 2D games, such as the recent Sonic Mania, they'll know that Sonic tends to run his way through various stages from the left to right, pushing forward until the goal is reached. The unlockable Mirror Mode in Sonic Origins flips the original games, giving hardcore fans a run for their money. Instead of going through the game like normal, Mirror Mode flips every single stage, and players will have to move from left to right, which can be jarring for those used to the traditional Sonic gameplay.

For those that want a little bit of extra challenge added to their Sonic Origins experience, actually unlocking Mirror Mode for all four Sonic games isn't that complicated, though it can take some time.

Sonic Origins players that don't have access to the Digital Deluxe version or the Start Dash pre-order pack will not have Mirror Mode unlocked from the start. To unlock it, players need to simply beat any of the Sonic games in the collection. After watching the credits roll, players will see the Mirror Mode option appear in the game's menu.

And for those that purchase the Digital Deluxe version of Sonic Origins will have access to the Mirror Mode right from the start, as well as the following bonuses:

  • Hard Missions
  • 10 Letterbox Backgrounds
  • Character animation in main menu
  • Camera Controls over main menu islands
  • Character animation during music islands
  • Additional music from Mega Drive and Genesis titles

The decision of whether to purchase the deluxe edition of Sonic Origins to unlock the Mirror Mode quickly is up to players. For a price comparison, the base game costs $39.99, and the deluxe version is $5 more, at $44.99.

While there is a Sonic Origins trophy/achievement for trying out Mirror Mode at least once, there's no other achievement for completing any of the Sonic games using the new mode.

Sonic Origins is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
