Sonic the Hedgehog has had a rather consistent two years of releasing interesting content for all kinds of fans. In terms of games, Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Origins and its "Plus" expansion, Sonic Superstars, and the unexpected Sonic Dream Team kept Sonic the Hedgehog fans adventuring with the blue blur and his friends throughout 2022 and 2023, and that isn't even going into what was available in other adaptations and mediums.

After 2022 was exciting with Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Origins, the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, and Sonic Prime keeping fans invested all year long, 2023 served as an "encore" to the year before it. Indeed, Sonic fans had a rather impressive 2023, but surprise releases like Sonic Superstars and Sonic Dream Team come with a price. Lining up such impressive years of content takes time to not only organize, but create, and Sonic Frontiers' content alone says that Sonic fans may need to slow down and prepare for a few quiet years ahead comparatively.

What to Expect From Sega in 2024

Sega has many exciting projects currently in the works, but this leads to the question of how many of them will come to fruition in 2024.

Sonic the Hedgehog's 2024 Belongs to Knuckles the Echidna and Shadow the Hedgehog

Just because there may not be many video game releases after the titles that the last two years have come out with doesn't mean that 2024 won't be exciting for Sonic fans. In terms of what to watch, Sonic loyalists have quite a packed schedule with Sonic Prime's final season releasing on January 11, the Knuckles series on Paramount Plus due to release early in the year, and the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie closing out the year on December 20. Of course, just like in the last two years, there is also plenty of room for surprises.

Expectations for Sonic the Hedgehog in 2024 Explained

It isn't unreasonable for fans to expect some video game releases from the Sonic franchise, but they shouldn't hold their breath. While there is a rumor of a holiday 2024 Sonic game circling, it won't be anything too noteworthy. Sonic Frontiers took five years to develop, and Sonic Superstars and Sonic Dream Team were already developed by other studios, meaning any holiday 2024 game would likely be a spin-off by one of Sega's partners.

However, more likely options may come in the form of DLC for the games that were released in 2023. Sonic Dream Team, the Apple Arcade exclusive platformer released back in early December, is already slated to add post-launch content in the future. A recent Sonic Superstars update leaked upcoming skins, which follows a similar pattern that Sonic Frontiers itself used before its DLC came out later down the line. This means that Sonic Superstars might not be done yet, either receiving its own DLC roadmap or more likely its own "Plus" expansion, in the future. The confirmed 2024 releases for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise are:

  • Sonic Prime season 3 (January 11)
  • Knuckles' solo Paramount Plus series (early 2024, might be delayed)
  • Sonic Dream Team post-launch content (TBD)
  • Potential leaked skins for Sonic Superstars
  • Sonic IDW comic releases (including Fang the Sniper mini-series, throughout the year)
  • Sonic Symphony world tour 2024 appearances and dates
  • New Sonic the Hedgehog LEGO sets for Knuckles, Rouge, and Shadow
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie (December 20)

Of course, there are other things that are almost guaranteed that fans can look forward to that haven't been confirmed yet. While this naturally applies to smaller releases such as merchandise coming out throughout the year, Knuckles the Echidna fans will finally get their due when it comes to character anniversary celebrations.

Amy Rose stole the spotlight in 2023, but Knuckles gets his own with his dedicated mini-series, as well as a 30th-anniversary comic starring him following the releases for Sonic, Tails, and Amy in the last few years. That said, even if the video games side of the franchise might be quiet for the next while, other aspects of the series will certainly keep the blue hedgehog and his friends moving until the time is right.
