September 21 could end up being a very important day for Sonic the Hedgehog, especially where his future projects are concerned. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has been on a hot streak as of late, with Sonic Frontiers managing to tell one of the series' best stories so far. However, even a franchise as classic as Sonic cannot rest on its laurels. It needs to maintain a high level of quality, and that means that the next games also need to be excellent. For that reason, Sonic fans will need to keep their eyes peeled for upcoming news.

Big news is expected from Tokyo Game Show 2023 in several ways. One of the biggest annual events in the gaming industry, the Tokyo Game Show is a chance for various developers to reveal upcoming developments for some of their biggest properties. Because it isn't tied to a specific company or developer, almost any prominent game or series can end up participating in the showcase. With so many heavily anticipated games already known, a lot of announcements are expected out of the event. Sonic the Hedgehog is one of many franchises in this position, with a few projects worth discussing.

The most relevant Sonic-related topic to touch upon is Sonic Frontiers' The Final Horizon update. Set to be released on September 28, The Final Horizon is a free update that promises more playable characters, more challenges, and a story expansion. A couple of trailers have come out, teasing what players should be expecting with a heavy emphasis on Amy, Knuckles, and Tails. In addition, the presence of Eggman and Sage alongside the heroes is interesting, because Sonic and Eggman working together is not a dynamic that has been explored very much. Tokyo Game Show could show off some gameplay to build further excitement before release.

The second thing that Sonic fans should be looking out for is the co-op adventure Sonic Superstars. Planned for release in October, Sonic Superstars is Sonic's first 2D platforming adventure since 2017's Sonic Mania, and it's remixing the series' formula. Up to four players can play simultaneously as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, with new features and power-ups that haven't been seen in a Sonic game before. Unlike The Final Horizon, the trailers have shown off plenty of gameplay for Sonic Superstars, as well as planned DLC. However, more information could be revealed at Tokyo Game Show in order to keep hype levels high.

The biggest reveal for Sonic that could come at Tokyo Game Show, though, would be a brand-new Sonic game. A leaker has implied a new Sonic title sometime in the upcoming year, but an announcement from Sega would cement a reason for fans to get excited. Admittedly, Sonic Frontiers was a major adventure that just released last year, and Sonic Superstars is bringing back retro Sonic, so another game already would be a bit of a surprise. However, a new spinoff or remake could easily be in the cards. A new title launch could help the Sonic series continue its current streak of success.

Tokyo Game Show will probably be the site of some of the biggest gaming announcements of the year, and Sonic The Hedgehog could be among them. With Sega's interest in Sonic reboots and remakes, it's clear that the Blue Blur won't be going away anytime soon. At the moment, fans already know that Sonic has some good content lined up in the future, but Sega could shine further light on what is to come, giving Sonic fans further reason to get excited. Anyone interested in Sonic the Hedgehog should keep an eye out for Tokyo Game Show on September 21.
