This year marks the 30th anniversary of one of the most beloved gaming franchises of all time: Sonic the Hedgehog. With an expansive collection of games, cartoon series, comic series, and a feature film, Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most iconic and recognizable faces to come from video gaming. To celebrate 30 years of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega has quite a lot in store for fans of the series.

As previously mentioned, a large variety of Sonic the Hedgehog related content has been made and produced over the course of the last thirty years. The most recent of which is the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie, whose sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, has an official release date confirmed by the voice actor of the titular character. However, in the meantime, Sega has several things planned in celebration of Sonic's 30-year celebration.

In addition to the design of the 30th Anniversary logo, Sega has also announced a large variety of Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary related merchandise for fans to purchase. This includes POP figures, enamel pins, clothing, and even an official G-Fuel energy drink. Though, there is still a lot more Sonic related merchandise for fans to enjoy.

In addition to the previously mentioned pieces of merchandise, Sega is also releasing a mini-comic series, toys, a line of jewelry, and a 30th-anniversary Sonic encyclopedia releasing in 2021. This is certainly quite the selection in terms of celebratory merchandise. Though, there does seem to be something fundamentally missing from the 30th-anniversary celebration.

Amidst all of the merchandise being made for the 30th-anniversary, not a single announcement was made for any sort of video game. In the past, Sega and Sonic Team released games in order to celebrate milestones similar to the 30th-anniversary, but as of right now, there seems to be no indication of anything similar to that. There are plenty of 3D Sonic games that deserve the same treatment as Super Mario 3D All-Stars, though.

Not to mention the fact that there hasn't been a mainline Sonic game released in over three years, with no signs of a new game on the horizon. Right now, it seems the gaming community is a little confused as to when Sega will announce a new Sonic game. Considering that the 30th anniversary seems to be the perfect time to do so, the fact that no news of an upcoming game has circulated has left many wondering when the blue blur will make an official return.
