A trailer has dropped for Sonic The Hedgehog 2, and it has riled fans up in anticipation for the blue blur's second big-screen adventure. Once some changes were made, Sonic the Hedgehog came out to a mostly positive reception, cementing itself as one of the better video game to movie adaptations.

In a world where superhero movies pack Easter eggs into every shot and ongoing universes tie into one another, it can get tiresome looking for any secrets that are being hinted at. Therefore, we've made a list of things that long-time Sonic fans will have clocked. After all, with so many games, memes, shows, and appearances, there's a lot to pack in!

7 Sonic Unleashed: The Werehog

Sonic-werewolf hybrid

This might be a reach, but with other things dropped into this trailer in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it flash, it might be on purpose. A certain shot in the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 trailer showed the blue lad on top of a building, in front of a giant full moon.

Surely, this is a nod to Sonic Unleashed and the 'Werehog' that Sonic transforms into at night. The moon isn't necessarily the cause for the Werehog transformations, but in werewolf lore, it is the main trigger. Let's pretend this is what they were going for.

6 Tails' Tornado Plane

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Yes, actually, it's Tails' biplane, named Tornado. A recurring feature in games, comics, and more piloted by the two-tailed sidekick, the plane seems to be key to Sonic and Tails' escape at least once in the upcoming film. In fact, the red racer plane has been front and center on the movies' new posters.

Tails' plane has always been a central part of the character's mythos, so it is fitting that Sonic's closest friend will be making his cinematic debut alongside Tornado. Tails' original voice actor is returning, too, which adds to the nostalgic feel of the movie and ties the universe together quite nicely.

5 He's Dr. Eggman Now

live action dr robotnik

Jim Carrey is back to reprise his role as the zany scientist Dr. Robotnik. Except now he's Dr. Eggman. The cosmetic changes of the character are clearly based on the games' designs of the evil villain – a huge, bushy mustache, bald head, and science-fiction-like goggles.

In the trailer, Robotnik can be seen piloting a craft that very closely resembles the Egg Mobile from Sonic's debut game too. After his time away on a different planet, it seems that the transformation into a supervillain is complete for this mad scientist. Carrey's performance was already fun and over-the-top in the first movie, so it is exciting to imagine what the actor might do now the character has gone completely off the rails.

4 Chaos Emeralds?

Anyone who's picked up a Sonic game will know immediately what Chaos Emeralds are. But what if that's not necessarily what was featured in the new movie trailer?

The Chaos Emeralds, of which there are seven to be collected, are controlled by one Master Emerald. Being more powerful than the seven individuals, this seems likely to be what is pictured, as Robotnik states he has "discovered the source of ultimate power". It will probably be used in a hare-brained scheme to try and thwart Sonic once and for all.

3 Mean Bean Coffee

This one is another very niche entry. In the trailer, viewers can see Doctor Robotnik's sidekick Agent Stone make a comeback. But this time, he's working at a coffee shop.

Look a bit closer, though, and you can see the name of the coffee shop on the menu board: Mean Bean Coffee. This is a reference to a falling block puzzle that was released in the mid-'90s called Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, a pretty solid game in its own right. Hopefully, the events of the new film will mean Stone can leave his barista days behind.

2 Sonic's SpindashSonic The Hedgehog 2 movie still spindash

The trailer shows off quite a nice action scene in which Sonic blazes through a tunnel filled with spiked balls, flames, and all sorts of hazards. He dodges all of these in style, while familiar sound effects match his actions.

And it's nice to see it isn't all just running around. Sonic's classic move, the spin dash, has been accommodated into the film. It is coupled with him being able to bounce off surfaces at speed and continue moving, as seen in the trailer with him ricocheting off walls and avoiding harm.

1 Chilli DogsSonic The Hedgehog 2 movie still

Does it even need to be said? Throughout Sonic history, one food, in particular, has been made known time and time again: chili dogs.

And again, fans can see that this is still his food of choice. At the beginning of the trailer, Sonic is preparing to race off and fight crime, by having a quick stretch, and a 'little snack' – one of his favorite foods, the chili dog. It is unclear why the hedgehog prefers this snack specifically, but it is a nice touch nonetheless.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to come out in theatres on April 8, 2022, in the United States.
