Sonic Frontiers is the first real open-zone Sonic game in the franchise. Each new area is huge, with tons of varied terrain to traverse. With five islands making up the Starfall Islands to explore, players might like to learn some techniques that will become essential in exploring these new areas.

Sadly missing from Sonic’s move set is his iconic spin dash, performed by tucking his head between his legs and spinning to generate speed. Sonic has utilized the spin dash ever since Sonic The Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis. More recent games introduced other means of faster traversal such as the drop dash and light-speed dash. Here's exactly how to pull off these two handy moves in Sonic Frontiers.

How To Drop Dash

The drop dash is a newer move in Sonic's arsenal, that first appeared in Sonic Mania. At the height of his jump, Sonic spins around at high speed to gain momentum. When touching the ground, he will quickly shoot off in either direction in a ball. This is a great move that players can use to gain momentum, and it quickly became a fan favorite.

In Sonic Frontiers, the drop dash makes a return to Sonic's move set. To pull off a drop dash, players must first press the jump button twice. After the second press of jump, hold the button down. While holding down the button, continue holding to hear the drop dash charging. Once Sonic hits the ground, he will speed off in a ball, making it much easier to escape encounters.

Light Speed Dash

Sonic’s light-speed dash, or ring dash, first appeared in SonicAdventure. Sonic’s first proper jaunt into 3D came with this useful new technique, but required an upgrade to his shoes. Once obtained, the light-speed dash would allow Sonic to use a line of rings to boost his speed by following the path of the rings.

Along with a whole new skill set of unlockable combat moves, the light-speed dash appears again in Sonic Frontiers. To successfully pull off the light-speed dash, first locate a line of rings and stand in front of them. Once ready, click in the movement stick and Sonic will dash along the path of the rings. With correct timing, Sonic can perform this move in midair, allowing his momentum and height to continue while exploring higher areas.

Sonic Frontiers is out now for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PC.
