Sonic Frontiers is definitely one of the most expansive adventures to ever feature the Blue Blur. Players have access to a new, massive open world filled with enemies, bosses, collectibles, and more. The release also gives fans access to some customization options via a Skill Tree, as well as some costume changes in the form of swappable shoes and gloves. These small additions help to break up the monotony and create more depth in what some are saying is the most ambitious Sonic title to ever grace the franchise.

What Are Soap Shoes In Sonic Frontiers?

Although they're called Soap Shoes, they don't actually have any connection to cleaning products. Soap was actually a brand of shoes that was released in 1997. The unique footwear was designed to be as "normal and comfortable" as traditional sneakers (the actual prototype was a Nike) while also offering a set of plastic liners fitted around the outside of the shoe. These plastic bits would allow the wearer to slide down rails or "grind" on them much like a skateboarder or rollerblader.

Anyone who played Sonic Adventure 2 knows how prominent grinding is throughout the adventure, with both Sonic and Shadow having the ability to slide effortlessly along rails. It's very likely that this concept was designed after developers discovered Soap shoes while on a trip to San Francisco (for game inspiration) as the products were being launched around the same time that Sonic Adventure 2 was in development.

This actually led to a sponsorship of sorts by Soap shoes, as the iconic footwear was added to Sonic Adventure 2, and a stylized version was given to the Hedgehog himself in-game. During this time, Soap shoes were being sold by a newly created company called Artemis Innovations. Unfortunately, over the years, due to some legal issues and bankruptcies, the brand would fade into relative obscurity. Today, it is considered a subsidiary of the popular Heelys company.
