Players of Sonic Frontiers have a huge number of options for acquiring various items and upgrades for Sonic, and one very useful method is fishing. Big the Cat hosts the fishing minigame, giving Sonic tokens for every fish caught which can then be exchanged for a number of useful items.

Sonic Frontiers is full of challenges and activities to uncover in its open world, all of which offer ways to upgrade Sonic and/or progress the story, and fishing can be a very profitable way of acquiring items and power early on. It does require players to find some purple coins and locate the fishing spots around the map first though, which this guide will cover the basics of.

At time of writing (09/11/2022) we have only uncovered the first of the many fishing spots accessible during the game. Once more have been found this article will be updated accordingly, but for now the guide will cover the basics of getting access to fishing on Kronos Island.

Where To Find Purple Coins

Purple coins are required to go fishing at any of the fishing spots, as Froggy likes them and so Big will let Sonic borrow his fishing rod in exchange for them. They can be found in a number of spots around the game world, but a good place to start is the immediate vicinity of the fishing spot on Kronos Island, since they can be found in the area surrounding the entry point. There are tons of them scattered around the islands, so finding coins to go fishing shouldn't be too much of a problem.

How To Fish

Once the player reaches a fishing spot with the requisite purple coins, they can fish at the cost of 1 coin per attempt. Players must choose the spot to cast their line to, ideally somewhere with lots of fish close together, and then wait for a bite. Hit the button when a fish bites to try to reel it in.

Players then need to watch the red ripple and hit the button again when the white ripple is inside the red ripple to successfully reel in their catch. Most of the time this will be a fish or valuable object that Big will just exchange for some tokens, but occasionally valuable items such as gold cards or scrolls can be found, which unlock new features or allow for a free item from Big's shop.

Where To Find The Fishing Spot On Kronos Island

The first fishing spot in the game can be located on the west side of Kronos Island atop a cliff overlooking the ocean, as seen in the image above. Players will need a gear to unlock the gate into the fishing area, where they will encounter a familiar face in the form of Big the Cat. Big will then break down the fishing minigame, explaining the basics of catching fish and serving as the tutorial for the fishing mechanic.

There are plenty of fish to catch, but players should especially look out for the Head Koco's Scroll and the Hermit Koco's Scroll, which unlock fast travel to the appropriate NPC when found.

Sonic Frontiers is available for PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
