Sonic Dream Team is ending a wonderful year for Sonic fans with a bit of a surprise. The mobile, Apple Arcade exclusive game features six playable characters, four unique stages to explore, and bosses to match. Everything in Sonic Dream Team is a result of Dr. Eggman's imagination and dreams, as a result of him trying to take over a relic that can make dreams into reality. While Sonic Dream Team's story is rather simple, the gameplay won't disappoint many dedicated Sonic fans.

Those who are already familiar with the machinations of Dr. Eggman may find themselves in for a surprise when Sonic Dream Team begins. Instead of the usual theme parks and death traps, Scrambled Shores is a balloon-filled tropical wonderland, and Nightmare Maze hides his face in the foliage scattered around. The final level, the rather aptly named Ego City, is Eggman's dream empire made real, which shoves his likeness in players' faces enough to make up for the rest of the game. For Sonic Colors fans, it also gives them plenty of his voice.

Sonic Dream Team Brings Back Dr. Eggman's PA Announcements With a Whole New Set

The PA Announcements Heard in Dr. Eggman's Interstellar Amusement Park Return

When Sonic Colors was originally released on the Nintendo Wii in 2010, players would be made to laugh throughout the adventure as each park had Eggman on the intercom, shilling gift stores while warning park goes about how they're at risk of "bodily harm," saying Starlight Carnival's space fleet will make visitors feel "small and insignificant in comparison," and more. These PA announcements have been a favorite part of Sonic Colors for many fans, and Sonic Dream Team brings it back in full force in Ego City.

Sonic Colors was originally exclusive to the Nintendo Wii with an alternate version available for Nintendo DS. However, in 2021, a remaster known as Sonic Colors: Ultimate was released for the Switch, PS4, PC, and Xbox One which allows these PA announcements to be heard on multiple platforms.

The announcements in Ego City are a bit of a strange case compared to Sonic Colors, though, due to how, in Sonic Dream Team, the announcements are powered by Dr. Eggman's ego. The voice fans hear most like isn't truly Eggman at all, but his self-esteem and inner monologs that keep him going in the face of obstacles and enemies. It's a bit strange, as there are numerous points in Sonic Dream Team where he does use his dreams to speak to Sonic and friends directly, yet that's likely not the case here.

The Humor in Sonic Dream Team's Eggman PA Announcements

Between both Colors and Dream Team, though, is one common thread, and that's the fact that Dr. Eggman's booming voice is meant to make players laugh above all else. Sonic Dream Team delivers on this very well, which definitely makes it a proper return to the lines that came before it. While some are a bit more general, serving to advertise the Eggman Empire and its slogan, a majority of them are straight-up jokes that fans may need to turn down the music of the game to hear.

Some are an extra level of funny when specifically encountered while fans are playing, such as hearing the doctor claim "the speed limit is five miles per hour, absolutely no going fast allowed" as players speed through time-based challenges as Sonic. Others such as Eggman awarding himself the "Employee of the Month" award, or even the rarely encountered line where Eggman questions if he truly looks like an egg out of insecurity, certainly poke fun at what kind of piece of Eggman dreamed the futuristic metropolitan area up. There are many more PA announcements for fans to encounter in Sonic Dream Team that are bound to make the final level incredibly fun if they get the chance to experience the game for themselves.

Sonic Dream Team is available now on Apple Arcade.
