4 Monsters

Other Titles: Denizens of Chaos

The monster race comprises magical beasts that came to be known around the same time humanity first discovered the gates and magic was found. Also called the Denizens of Chaos, these monsters are magical creatures that reside within the gates. Due to the manipulation of the Rulers, a large part of the monsters bear extreme hatred toward humans.

Although most of them appear to have no intellect and are mindless, they possess the capacity of evolution and eventually gain enough intelligence to rival humans to the point where some are even capable of human speech. Like hunters, monsters are also ranked using the international S-E Ranking system to gauge their varying threat levels. Beyond their rankings, monsters are categorized into eight classes: the Undead, Demon, Beast, Snow Folk, Giant, Insect, Humanoid, and Dragon.

3 Humans

Representatives: Hunters

The most central and pivotal of the races in the grand scheme of the plot, Humanity finds itself at the very centre of the struggle between the Rulers and the Monarchs. Shortly after the discovery of the Gates and magic, humans began to go through Awakening, which granted a percentage of humans magical and superhuman abilities. Through that, the Hunting occupation came into existence. Humans that had awakened with these magical abilities began to hunt and kill the magical beasts that spawned within the Gates, thus becoming Hunters. To gauge the extent of the powers of these hunters, the international S-E Ranking System was adopted, with the S-Rank being the most powerful and the E-Rank being the weakest.

The Hunters in Solo Leveling help maintain balance in a world fraught with monsters & monarchs. Here are some of the strongest members of the bunch.

Through rankings, hunters were divided into ranks based on the ranking system, and there was an unspoken understanding regarding hunters that a hunter could not grow beyond the rank he awakened with, meaning a hunter's powers were already set in stone after he had awakened. Hunters are generally classified into combat and non-combat hunters, further classified into six broad types: Fighters, Mages, Assassins, Tankers, Rangers, and Healers. However, an essential feature of humans is that a hunter is a human, but a human doesn't necessarily have to become a hunter if they do not wish to.

2 Monarchs

Collective Skill: Spiritual Body Manifestation

plague monarch, beast monarch and frost monarch

As a race, the Monarchs serve as the series' primary antagonists and, as a result, have a significant bearing on the story's events. Created by the Absolute Being at the Dawn of Time, out of the darkness that existed, the Monarchs were born with the sole purpose of the destruction of humanity, and as a result, they harbored extreme disdain for humanity and engaged in endless struggles with the Rulers to ensure the destruction of the Earth. In pursuance of their endless desire for the destruction of the Earth, eons after their creation, the Absolute Being was ousted and killed. The death of the Absolute Being ensured that the Rulers could use the remaining fragments of his power to successfully hunt down the Monarchs, ensuring a tilt in favor of the Rulers in the ongoing struggle, which only lasted until Ashborn intervened in the war, restoring the power balance between both races.

Solo Leveling: 20 Strongest Characters In The Manhwa, Ranked

From the Absolute Being to Sung Jin-Woo, the Shadow Monarch, Solo Leveling has remarkably powerful characters.

The monarchs, entities created by the Absolute Being, are beings of tremendous power, like the Rulers, and are the most powerful existences in the series as a collective. There are a total of nine monarchs created, including the Monarch of Destruction, the Monarch of Shadows, the Monarch of White Flames, the Monarch of Fangs, the Frost Monarch, the Monarch of the Iron Body, the Monarch of the Beginning, the Monarch of Plagues, and the Monarch of Transfiguration. Being spiritual entities, the monarchs have a general weakness, which is not being able to descend into the physical world without a proper vessel completely, and unlike the Rulers, monarchs take entirely over the bodies of their vessels were they to have one, essentially stealing their host's body but at the cost of complete mortality.

1 Rulers

Other Titles: Fragments of Brilliant Light

the rulers

Like the Monarchs, the Rulers are an ancient race of angelic humanoids created by the Absolute Being at the Dawn of Time from the existing light. Similar to the Monarchs, the Rulers were created with the sole purpose of protecting humanity from the Monarchs' will of destruction. With both ancient races made for two opposing purposes, the Rulers and Monarch engaged in an endless and ceaseless war over the fate of the Earth, with each faction doing anything to subdue the other. Their continuous war led to the ousting and killing of the Absolute Being, which meant that there was no longer a force powerful enough to restrain both sides from annihilating each other.

Using the Absolute Being's death to their advantage, the Rulers used the remaining fragments of his powers to shift the power balance of the war in their favor by capturing Legia, the Monarch of Beginning. However, This power shift only lasted until the Shadow Monarch, Ashborn, who was also a Ruler and the strongest one, decided to intervene by allying himself with the Monarchs. Ashborn became a monarch due to the coup carried out by the other Rulers against the Absolute Being. Created by God himself, Rulers, like monarchs, are mighty beings incomparable to the other races. However, because they only possess spiritual forms, they can only choose vessels for themselves. Unlike Monarchs who completely take over the bodies of their vessels, Rulers allow their vessels to retain complete control over their bodies, an implication of which is that they cannot exert their full powers while in possession.
