Every now and then audiences get to read and gawk at the millions and millions of dollars their favorite celebrities make for starring in big budget movies. It's always fun to see the insanely high, mind breaking numbers, and guess who among the list will take the top spots. While many can probably predict some of the biggest earners off the top of their head, there is one that may surprise. According to Forbes, the highest paid actress in the world this year was Sofia Vergara, of Modern Family fame.

Coming in at a sum of $43 million dollars over the course of the year, Vergara took the top spot yet again. She also had the distinction of highest paid actress in 2012, 2013, and 2016 as well. Rounding out second and third this time were Angelina Jolie with $35 million, and Gal Gadot at $31 million. Much of Vergara's earnings in the past were from the hit series Modern Family, where she played Gloria, and earned $500,000 per episode filmed. Currently she is working as a judge on America's Got Talent, where she reportedly earns at least $10 million each season.

Of course, it's worth noting that this has been an unusual year for actors of all stripes, with the film industry being decimated by the Coronavirus pandemic. The box office is practically non-existent, with the scant few films actually released opting for less traditional formats such as video on demand. As a result, television stars have managed to stake a strong claim for themselves in the earnings figures, keeping their salaries paid with lucrative TV and streaming contracts that continue to pay even when new content isn't being filmed.

There were quite a few other famous names on the list as well, as one might expect. Melissa McCarthy made it at $25 million, as did Nicole Kidman with $22 million. Interestingly, Viola Davis made the top ten list for the first time at $15.5 million, mostly due to her role as Annalise Keating in the hit series How to Get Away With Murder. So it seems that just because the film industry is slowing down, doesn't mean that big stars aren't getting at least some sort of revenue.
