Crossover fighting games are nothing new. Since the early days of arcade fighters, developers were pairing their games with other franchises and even with one another, creating a cool clash of worlds for fans of different studios. These days, most crossovers tend to happen in platform fighters like Super Smash Bros. and MultiVersus, but it sounds like one of the classic arcade crossover franchises, SNK vs. Capcom, may potentially make a grand return.19 years have passed since SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos, the last proper entry in the series that pitted characters from franchises like The King of Fighters and Street Fighter against one another. That’s a long time for a franchise to lay dormant, but according to SNK producer Yasuyuki Oda, interest in reviving SNK vs. Capcom (or Capcom vs. SNK for the games developed by Capcom) has been growing since the EVO 2022 fighting game tournament earlier this month.During that event, promotional posters were shared featuring SNK and Capcom characters together, and it seems the general reaction among fans has been very positive. So much so that Oda told VGC that it “reconfirmed” the public’s interest in a new crossover game. He even went so far as to call it “probably one of the most wanted things” from the entire worldwide fighting game community.
When asked if SNK and Capcom are interested, Oda stated that he is “definitely” interested in making a new game at some point, adding that he thinks “everybody on all sides, in both parties, are interested in making a reality.” Despite this, SNK apparently hasn’t had any serious talks about it with Capcom yet, so it sounds like plans aren’t in motion so far. But Oda stressed that SNK has plenty of experience with crossovers, so if the two companies do decide to make a SNK vs. Capcom revival, it shouldn’t take long to get the ball rolling.
Oda’s not the only developer that has expressed interest in bringing SNK vs. Capcom back. Over on the other side, Capcom’s Hideaki Itsuno, who directed Capcom vs. SNK 2, stated last year that he would love to direct a sequel. Although he’s busy these days with the Devil May Cry and Dragon’s Dogma series, he said he’s “more than willing” to hop back into the fighting game genre, provided he’s given the budget and crew to do so.
Whether SNK vs. Capcom will actually return is a question only time will answer, but on the plus side, SNK fans do have one confirmed revival heading their way. At EVO, it was announced that a new Fatal Fury game is in the works, marking the series’ first proper new entry in over 20 years.
