The SNES Classic Edition released roughly 24 hours ago and, as expected, Nintendo seems to have another hit on its hands. Gamers who were unable to secure a pre-order when they went on sale headed into retail stores yesterday and braved long lines in an attempt to bring home the tiny console and its 21 pre-loaded games. It probably comes as no surprise that within hours the hardware is already sold out at stores like GameStop and ThinkGeek.

Nintendo did promise that there would be a much better supply of SNES Classic consoles than there were of the previous retro console, but that doesn't mean they are going to be easy to find. Some gamers spent months trying to get their hands on a Nintendo Switch and that was far less limited than these trendy retro consoles.

Bob Puzon, GameStop’s VP of Merchandising, has already released a statement about the success of the SNES Classic launch and the possibility of finding one on shelves in the near future...

"Nintendo has done it again! Customer demand for the SNES Classic was just like we expected... We sold out of our SNES Classic inventory within minutes in both our GameStop and ThinkGeek retail channels. But customers shouldn’t worry. We’re getting more very soon. Once we do, our customers will be the first to know!”

The SNES Classic Edition is sure to be a massive hit throughout the fall and into the holiday season, assuming Nintendo can get them to retailers fast enough. The demand is certainly there and both nostalgic adult consumers and a younger generation of gamers are both looking to get their hands on this device. Some Switch owners are still holding out hope that these games may come to the console in a future virtual arcade, but the continued financial success of the retro consoles doesn't look great for that prediction.
