In this modern era of gaming, especially in the open world RPG genre, most people would immediately think of Skyrim when they hear the name Bethesda. However, as the fifth installment in the series, 2011's release is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the world of Tamriel. As one of the most beloved Elder Scrolls games, Morrowind is something of a classic, especially for older gamers. It may have aged now, especially given that it's 20-years-old at this point, but a team of modders is trying to bring the realm into a more contemporary gaming generation.

A new mod has just been released, called Shadow of Morrowind, and is created by the SoM Team. Technically, this is actually a re-release from a project that was sadly abandoned. However, it's being picked back up again, and has been ported to the Special Edition of Skyrim. Essentially, what the add-on does is allow players to explore Morrowind within Skyrim's engine. More specifically, it shows the world from the third installment of the franchise as it existed in the Fourth Era, which is when the fifth game takes place according to the lore's timeline.

The mod description says that this iteration of the now-ongoing project allows players to explore some of the fantastic locations of Morrowind's Vvardenfell island after the eruption of the Red Mountain and the land has become a shadow of its former self. For anyone who is interested in contributing to the mod, the team says they are on the lookout for modders who can assist in its development, especially as this is a work-in-progress, and as such will likely be incorporating a lot more content in the future.

As mentioned above, Shadow of Morrowind was a previous mod for Skyrim before it was cancelled. For those who are into the Elder Scrolls games in general, it provides an opportunity to explore the two-decade old entry within the current installment's engine. It is worth mentioning that anyone interested in trying the mod out will need to have the Special Edition of Skyrim.

With the official studio taking a long time to develop Elder Scrolls 6, with no word about whether or not it's even in production, there's an argument to be had that Bethesda could do a remake of Morrowind. In this current epoch of remakes and remasters, there will no doubt be those out there who would love to see this classic RPG reimagined with modern gaming tools and ideas, but for now, this add-on, as well as others in development, are a good alternative.
