A gamer has encountered a very strange situation in Skyrim, where follower Lydia appears to go insane and slaughters everyone in Dragonsreach. Lydia is usually seen as a trusty companion in Skyrim, but this shows that she's very capable of betrayal, too.

Companions in Skyrim are one of the most important elements of Bethesda's RPG. The adventure isn't quite the same without a follower narrating and commenting on every possible situation. Lydia is the one most players will encounter first, given as a reward for becoming the Thane of Whiterun. Because of this, she's become arguably the most iconic follower in the game over the years, with her stoic personality becoming something of a meme since Skyrim's release.

The Reddit post by Torbiel1234 shows Lydia in Dragonsreach, bizarrely in the middle of a fight with a child. Already on the floor are two dead NPCs, including the corpse of the unpopular character, Skyrim's Nazeem. Players in the thread joked about the strange situation, with one player claiming she had carried "one too many of your burdens," referencing her famous catchphrase. Others offered an explanation for this - Lydia can be particularly careless with her aiming, especially when using items such as a staff, and that can result in massacres such as this.

According to the player, their only actual solution to the issue was to kill Lydia. Over the years, Skyrim players have shared many memorable Lydia deaths, but this would prove to be one of the more tragic ones, with it seemingly being the result of a glitch. One user suggested that they could actually just have cast the Calm spell on her, although it seems to have come too late for that to be of help here.

Many gamers will be hoping that Bethesda chooses to expand on the follower system in The Elder Scrolls 6. Adventuring with companions is one of the most engaging parts of RPGs, and Bethesda games are no different. While Skyrim focused on a quantitative approach to followers, allowing the player to bring aboard many different companions, Fallout 4 and the upcoming Starfield have taken a less-is-more approach, with attention given to the depth of each follower. Each method has its own positives and benefits, and while every player has their own opinions and ideas for The Elder Scrolls 6's followers, it will be a while yet before Bethesda is ready to reveal any specifics about the upcoming game.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim - Anniversary Edition is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
