Skyrim players recently pointed out that the ancient ruins in the game look so well-maintained because the undead draugrs take care of them. Skyrim is one of the most immersive open-world games ever made, and that’s because little details like this one give more life to its sprawling world.

Even over a decade after its launch, Skyrim remains one of the most popular games in the world. A few days ago, Skyrim even surpassed Starfield in simultaneous Steam players, and due to its enduring popularity, gamers are still discovering details.

Christopher Paolini, author of the Eragon book series, joins in on the Paarthurnax debate, one of the most divisive topics in Skyrim's community.

Recently, Skyrim player Asleep_Steak_ went to social media to ask why the ancient ruins in the game had lit candles if no one lived there. This prompted the r/Skyrim community to dig up an interesting in-game book called Amongst the Draugr, which explains that the draugrs are responsible for maintaining dungeons, cleaning them, and lighting up the candles. The book tells a story written by a wizard from the College of Winterhold called Bernadette Bantien. During her research, the scholar lived for seven months in dungeons among the draugr, and studied their “way of living” to understand more about why the ancient priests of the Dragon Cult were buried with so many of them. According to the mage, “Every day, a different set of draugr would awaken, shamble their way to the sarcophagus of their priest, and prostrate themselves before it. Several hours of this, followed by a meticulous cleaning of the area.”

The draugrs of Skyrim are very interesting creatures that feature as the most common enemies in the game’s ancient catacombs and shrines. These undead were ancient Nords who were often buried alive when their masters from the Dragon Cult died. Despite not being intelligent creatures, the draugr serve as protectors, attacking on sight anyone who invades these tombs.

It’s always interesting to see gamers discovering new details about Skyrim so many years after the release. Lately, fans are finding some very weird things, though, like when a Skyrim player found a room full of dead NPCs. When someone kills a story NPC in the game, their body does not disappear. Instead, it’s sent to a normally inaccessible area where it’s kept dead to avoid game-breaking bugs. The gamer stumbled upon this macabre storage room by teleporting to a dead NPC.
