Forming a huge community and selling millions of copies, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has transformed into one of the most iconic RPGs of all time since its release back in 2011. As of yesterday, the game was trending on Twitter, with fans posting their shock at the realization that Bethesda's seminal role-playing experience would be turning 10 years old at the tail-end of 2021

Considering Skyrim is often considered one of the most popular releases in modern gaming, with a number of players having fond memories of enjoying it upon release, it's bewildering to think that it's welcoming such a significant anniversary this November. With the game dominating social media yesterday, it seems many took the opportunity to share their love for Skyrim, while others were more shocked at how quickly time has passed.

"Skyrim will be 10 years old this year, in case anyone was interested in aging instantaneously," says one Twitter user when discussing the upcoming milestone, while another claimed, "Skyrimis10years old this year so I think I need to lie down." A third user even highlighted how shocking it is that, in the decade since Bethesda launched Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls 6 has failed to materialize, stating "This year will be 10 years since Skyrim was released (the first time) and no sign of The Elder Scrolls VI in sight." While the posts all vary, one thing is clear: Skyrim still has a wide community of passionate fans who continue to explore its expansive open-world to this day.

For those who somehow weren't following Skyrim's evolution into a gaming staple, the title originally hit shelves on November 11, 2011. Players assumed the role of the Dragonborn, dropping into the snow-covered world of Skyrim as they battled back the world-ending return of Alduin and his army of fearsome dragons. The game received rave reviews and was a financial powerhouse, quickly becoming one of the most defining RPGs ever released. In the years since, it has become a widespread meme, mainly due to its hilarious bugs and Bethesda's enthusiasm in re-releasing the game through various ports, remasters, and bundled editions.

It won't be the only iconic release to turn 10 this year, however, with several other major games also celebrating the anniversary. Dark Souls, Batman: Arkham City, Portal 2, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception all released a decade ago as well, joining Skyrim in making their entire playerbase feel incredibly old. With players celebrating Skyrim's launch, it seems many are still questioning when its follow-up will hit shelves, with Bethesda still keeping the upcoming fantasy RPG under wraps.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
