Highlights

  • Captain America may face unique challenges in Skydance's Marvel game due to the focus on a diverse group of heroes and the need for balance.
  • Skydance's WW2-era Marvel game will feature an ensemble of heroes, with each character needing their own spotlight and gameplay niche.
  • While Captain America is a major draw, Skydance must ensure that lesser-known characters like Gabe and Nanali get their moment to shine in the game.

In Skydance's Marvel game, Captain America could unexpectedly prove to be the biggest challenge. It's an odd concept to consider since Captain America is one of the most recognizable superheroes in Marvel's library. In the context of Skydance's game, though, his presence might not be as cut-and-dry as his appearances in Marvel games usually are. There are a few factors that will need to be kept in mind regarding both him and the other protagonists. Skydance's title won't be like past Marvel Games, and that means that Captain America may require a different approach.

Currently in development, Skydance's WW2-era Marvel game is a rather eclectic addition to Marvel's gaming legacy. In the game, the fight against Hydra will be anchored by four heroes:

  • Steve Rogers, the hero better known as Captain America
  • Azzuri, The King of Wakanda and Black Panther during World War 2
  • Gabriel Jones, a member of the Howling Commandos
  • Nanali, an expert spy from Wakanda

Therefore, there should be plenty of time to show off all four characters. This group looks sure to make the game a memorable one in Marvel's catalog, and yet Captain America may be at the biggest disadvantage due to the baggage his name carries.

Skydance's Marvel game has finally been revealed, with an interesting tagline hinting at multiple playable characters, and a unique setting.

Skydance's Upcoming Marvel Game Needs to Be Careful With Captain America

Captain America is the Biggest Character in Skydance's Marvel Game

Captain America is one of Marvel's most recurring characters, which should be no surprise. He's one of the company's biggest icons, and easily the most well-known or popular character in Skydance's game. While Black Panther is a well-known name for Marvel, for instance, the Black Panther in this game is Azzuri rather than T'Challa. As for the other two, their careers are much less notable. Gabe has typically been a member of an ensemble cast, and Nanali is a reimagining of a particularly obscure minor character. While Steve is the most famous name in the cast, Skydance must ensure that he doesn't overshadow his allies.

Cap's Powers Can't Make Him Better Than Every Other Character

Cap needs to have a specific niche in the game. While a solo Captain America game could have him be as spectacular as possible, he will share the spotlight with three other characters. Plus, despite Cap's peak athleticism, leadership, and shield-fighting skills, Skydance can't make his gameplay better than the rest. He's a fantastic fighter, but other characters need a chance to show off their skills as well. Azzuri is T'Challa's predecessor, Gabe is a trained soldier, and Nanali is a spy. All of them should have a chance to put those skills to use in the game in ways that make them equally fun to play.

Gabe and Nanali Need Their Moment in the Sun in Skydance's Game

This game is a major chance at relevance for Gabe and Nanali. Few would have expected the Guardians of the Galaxy in Ultimate Alliance 3, much less as the starting characters, if they hadn't been plucked from obscurity by the MCU, for example. However, that can't happen if Gabe and Nanali are treated as second-tier characters next to Cap. The Marvel universe has a chance to expand with Skydance's game, but not if the lesser-known characters don't get any spotlight.

Captain America will inevitably be at the center of the game's promotions alongside Azzuri, due to them being the established superheroes of the group with larger-than-life superhero personas. That said, EA's Black Panther game will be giving the titular character a solo trip; meanwhile, Skydance's game is a four-hero ensemble game that must cherish each playable protagonist. Steve Rogers is the group's biggest draw from a popularity standpoint, but Skydance can't make its Marvel game all about Captain America.
